Title: My Les Pauls
Post by: blue on September 21, 2013, 04:00:57 PM
I find myself alone in the house today, and I haven't seen much of my guitars lately, so I just took the notion to get out my Les Pauls.  Now they're out, why not share them? :)

(http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii166/blue1million/DSC00464_zpsb629c243.jpg) (http://s264.photobucket.com/user/blue1million/media/DSC00464_zpsb629c243.jpg.html)

from left to right, the top row are 1978 The Paul; 1975 Deluxe; 1975 Standard; 2010 Traditional
second row; 1970 Custom; 1973 Deluxe; 1993 Studio Lite MIII; 2004 Standard

and here are close ups of the two pretty ones

What a superb collection  :D

My favourites are the 75 deluxe and the 2004 standard. The 70 custom is close behind ,but to me it would look better without the chicken head knob.

I hope you got to spend some time with the bunch.

Mighty fine collection!  :D

I like the fact you've got some curiosities, like The Paul, the Studio Lite MIII (I remember that being reviewed in Guitarist years ago) and that Custom with a varitone, I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Nice to see someone boldly displaying a whole collection as well, you might have more LPs than anyone.... apart from Phil King?

Very nice - Love the Deluxe models - IMO, they're the best LPs, those mini humbuckers are amazing, warm but sharp.  Best LP I ever played was a deluxe.

A great selection. I have just one Les Paul (an Agile copy) but hope to own a Gibson one some day.. and your post perfectly illustrates the range of cool LPs out there. Of course the Deluxes  and the Varitone custom are eye catching. I also like the MIII and have always been curious about the types of tones you can get with those.

that Custom with a varitone, I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

I saw a Custom with a varitone for sale in England about 2 years ago (when I was looking for an early 70's custom).  Not sure if this is the same one, or if it's a factory stereo job.

Nice to see someone boldly displaying a whole collection as well, you might have more LPs than anyone.... apart from Phil King?

I have 7 with carved tops, but another 5 juniors & specials!  I always wanted a deluxe but never got one - I have a Firebird but still like the mini-HB's in a Les Paul.

Thanks guys :)
we've had a bit of debate about the varitone on the custom. I'm fairly sure it was done in the gibson factory.  It does add oddity value to the guitar, but it's generally not really a lot of use.

The deluxe pickups are great too, the '73 in particular is an amazing sounding guitar.  a few times we've compared it against other Les Pauls, and it always stands out as sounding particularly good.  I've been seriously considering trying a set of P90's in the '75.

The '75 Standard was a real find, and a guitar i had been looking for for about 10 years!  Factory original Les Pauls with full size humbuckers from that year aren't exactly commonplace, and this one is in great condition, looks beautiful and plays and sounds lovely.  overall, it's probably my favourite.

I have lots of Juniors and Specials, but wasn't sure if I should count them as "proper" Les Pauls.  Also not sure if I should count my Epiphones, although they do legitimately have "Les Paul" on the headstock.

Philly, I'm wondering if you have any part built LPs? Or is that mainly Fender styled stuff?

Philly, I'm wondering if you have any part built LPs? Or is that mainly Fender styled stuff?

  No, the parts mountain is really all Fender type stuff.  Teles and Strats.  I don't think set-neck guitars really lend themselves to home-builds, although there are some eBay sellers who occasionally have Gibson or PRS guitars stripped of all hardware.

That said, in my (much-diminished) Warmoth parts collection I do have an LP body and neck, although they're really just Fender-style parts in LP shapes - swamp ash body, maple/rosewood bolt-on neck.  The original idea was for a Fano-influenced Tele/LP Jr hybrid, but I wasn't happy with the way Warmoth routed the body so I'm thinking about something a bit more like a Tele Deluxe, but with different pickups.  Of course, it'll never happen....

what amp(s) do you use?

I've got a handful of nice marshalls, a JMP 2204 which i absolutely love, a '69 super P.A., with two channels modded to superlead spec, which is an absolute monster of an amp! Also a Vintage Modern, which is a great and under rated amp,  and the two that made me think I'd never need to buy another amp; an AFD-100 and a YJM-100.  Yep, Les Pauls into Marshalls may be a cliche, but that's because it's so damn good :)

over the years, most of my money ended up in these marvellous guitars and amps, but now that there's a little baby in the house, i don't know if there's likely to be much in the way of additions.

It does have all those, yes.  For a brief moment when was first looking into it, I thought it might be a '69, but the volute in particular means it can't be.  the serial number puts it between '70 and '73.  The pickups covers aren't engraved, which mostly rules out '72/73.  I decided to go with '70 because, frankly, it sounds better than "early '70s"  :D

The amps are very cool :)  at the minute, they're stored together in a bit of a tight space, but when i get a chance I'll do a bit of photographing

In that case I've got 10 "Les Pauls", 6 Gibsons and 4 Epiphones.

2 Standards, 4 Juniors, 4 Specials.  I've also got an '80s Burny "Rock'n'Roll Version" doublecut Junior which is extremely close to the real thing, so I include it in the collection as a sort of first cousin....

Now show us your Epiphones!  :D

I've an Epiphone JB too! My LP Custom is very similar to yours, pancake, volute, large inlay in 21st fret position.  I've always assumed 70/71 too.  I don't have a varitone though!   The neck on mine is a little fatter than the later 71/72 necks.

Okay Philly, just for you, here are my Epiphones

(http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii166/blue1million/epis_zps9942c6e3.jpg) (http://s264.photobucket.com/user/blue1million/media/epis_zps9942c6e3.jpg.html)

from left to right; A Zakk Wylde Bullseye with BKP Crawlers, a Stetsbar and a killswitch; A Les Paul Xtreme with Mississippi Queens and a Les Trem; a 7 String with a Miracle Man and a Mule and a Les Paul E.S.

For a while I wanted to put Stormy Mondays in the E.S., which is fully hollow except for a block under the bridge.  I think they would have been perfect for it.  But lately I've been looking at Gretsch Brian Setzers, so now I'm thinking Filtertrons and a Bigsby :)

I knew you'd have something interesting!  :D

A Stetsbar, a Les Trem - I remember seeing those things more than 30 years ago, are they any good? - and I really like the E.S.
Title: Re: My Les Pauls
Post by: blue on September 24, 2013, 11:28:17 PM
The Stetsbar actually works remarkably well.  In feel at least, I find it more like a Floyd Rose than a Strat trem, and nothing at all like a Bigsby.  I'm sure someone will disagree :)
The Les Trem is much more subtle, definitely more gentle wobbles.  I was amazed to see it on sale somewhere recently for over $300!  i seem to remember it being about £80, and it's a very simple device.

The E.S. is a fantastic little guitar.  with the stock pickups it sounds really nice, so i'm hoping whatever I eventually put in, be it Stormy Mondays or Filtertrons, will sound amazing.  It's made me really want a Gibson Les Paul Florentine, and sent me in the direction of that Gretsch

Thanks for the compliments everyone :)

Mr Air, yes, I have one or two other shapes as well.

Littlered, I've only seen those in magazines and online.  They were like a Standard with a bound headstock and a baked maple fretboard, weren't they?  I'd certainly be interested to give one a go.

yeah more or less. there were 2 different versions under the classic custom name i'm pretty sure

this one, which also came with a p90 option
(http://www.pssl.com/images/ProdImage01/1000/LPCCAEGH1.jpg)

and this one, which i'm more interested in

i know the bottom one is the baked maple version. not really sure on the specs of the other one
