Title: differences between the miracle man and the painkiller in a Lp guitar style ?
Post by: chopeth on September 29, 2013, 10:04:10 PM
I have a mensinger arcadia 7 string ( lp style in woods; thick mahogany body and neck, flame maple top and rosewood fretboard ) and i ve got a miracle man bridge and initially i was going to change if for the same model but in soapbar style ( before it had emgs ) but sometimes i found the miracle man a bit dark and a little scooped so i want to know what are the main differences between this two pickups because due to the eq graphics it seems that the miracle man is brighter than the miracle man but many people think miracle man is quite dark tue to the low mids in mahogany and in some post i have read miracle man is thick in the lows and in anothers the painkiller i dont know what to do, ! Thanks !

Hey,

i can't comment on the Miracle Man, however I did just install a Painkiller into the bridge of my PRS Singlecut (Mahogany body, maple top, rosewood neck) and it sounds fantastic.  The Painkiller definitely sounds thick in my Singlecut, and I don't think I'd want any more bass or low end, as much of the solid low end is coming from the thick mahogany.

I think the Painkiller would do very well in a 7 string.  The low B will stay nice and tight, and the upper mid focus of the Painkiller will help everything cut through.

I made some cilps of the PK in my PRS -

The MM has a very cutting treble end, I'm surprised you find it dark.

I think we really need to differenciate dark and muddy here, while factoring in guitar, amp and cab.

I have no personal experience with the MM, but from what I know I can see people refering to it as dark.

While if people were to find that I would suggest lowering the Pu about one mm and raising the pole pieces by the same value and see where it takes them, even that might not always take them to a point where their ears do not feel like it is dark sounding anymore.

Well I would imagine the Painkiller would be less dark because it's very mid heavy, and still has a lot of highs where the mids on the MM are more scooped.

On a 6 string, I'd definitely choose the Painkiller because I like heavy midrange, but if I was buying a 7 string, I might want the meatier MM sound

the miracle man has a lot of treble, but does sound darkish in the lower strings
the painkiller has less treble, but sounds overall brighter (still not a bright pickup, but not dark either, in my experience)
it has more picking attack and a lot more upper midrange
