It's taken a long time, but Gibson have finally reissued the M-III! Some may recall my fondness for this particular model. I have slightly mixed feelings about this new one, it is different from the original. The change from Poplar to Mahogany in the body is interesting, but a big change. They've also switched to Dirty Fingers pickups instead of the original 500t/NSX/498r. There's a push/pull instead of the original's mini switch, and it seems to be a straightforward coil split now rather than the seperare humbucker/single coil modes. the scratch plate is gone too. Oh, and the original's pearl Gibson logo seems to have become a screen print
I'm glad to see it back, and both intrigued and a little dissappointed by the changes. I want a blue one though :)

AGH! My eyes!!
Not quite my thing...
It is a very nice blue, though :D
-
I've always quite liked the look of the M-III, although I've never actually played one.
I seem to remember seeing a guy called Steve Morris (from the band Export) playing one with Ian Gillan, many years ago (strange to think there was a time when an Ian Gillan gig could actually be televised!)
No likelihood of me actually buying one though, the Floyd and slim taper neck put paid to that. And I did prefer the original version with exotic-looking body timbers.

I like the slim taper neck and floyd aspect. Not so keen on the body shape. Nice wood on the old ones but hate the pickguard
-
I kinda liked the scratchplate - the guitar looks bare without it, to me - but always thought it looked too squashed around the controls. It would've been better if the controls were actually mounted on it.
I'm starting to think it might be fun to design a custom version with a redesigned scratchplate and a hardtail bridge....
-
Not sure I remember that at all...
Have to say I prefer the original version from the pictures - still not quite my thing, though...
It looks like a bit of a mixed-up Frankenstein's monster to me. Definitely not keen on the body shape - don't like those cutaways/horns at all - the look of the fretboard doesn't appeal, never really understood those "upside down" headstocks...
Trying to pick out some nice things to say...
"it's a nice blue" - I'll stick with that...
And yeah, I think it needs the scratchplate. It's a weird one, but it suits the guitar.

These are my originals

The two black standards are a '91 and a '93, the Deluxe is a '92, and the red standard was my first "proper" guitar, bought brand new in 1993 :) that must have been a good year, the two '93s are the best of the bunch, the black one in particular is a brilliant guitar.

just how many guitars do you own and how many superbowls have you won?
-
Um, i have about 40
never intended to have so many, they've just kind of accrued over the years.
What's a superbowl? is that like an All Ireland championship? :)

i keep forgetting so many of you are from Europe haha. its a professional sports championship pretty much
-
ha, i'm joking, of course i know what the superbowl is :) The All Ireland championship is better though PDT_008

Yay! More than me! :D
The burden of guilt has temporarily been lifted from my shoulders.
...... now where's my credit card?

you're a cheeky one

Wow, twice as many as me!
That's more or less giving me an excuse to buy more!

I have 8 right now but if anything I'm trying to down size and make the ones I have a bit better. Plus I hardly ever play my acoustic or my bass. But they are nice to have

I had an acoustic and a couple of basses, but sold them long ago.... made room for more electrics.
-
My problem is, i get irrationally attached to things. there are guitars that i should get rid of, but every time i come close i think "but what if i need it later?" What am i likely to actually need it for!?
I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do some selling. Of course, at the minute it seems difficult to get any kind of decent price for anything

True, it's not been a good time for selling recently.
I'm tending to, as you say, bite the bullet and think "some money is better than just leaving this guitar sitting around doing nothing". Within reason, of course!
If you were to sell any of your Gibsons (not that I'm suggesting you should!) they do seem to be holding up reasonably well. But PRS.... well, you can hardly give 'em away. :(
-
Well I have no reason to sell the acoustic because it wouldn't sell for much. And the bass is just so pretty. .. haha It's a mark hoppus signature fender. It's a jazz bass body with p bass neck and p bass pickups that are actually switched around. I really want a geddy Lee jazz bass though. ..

I do really dig that Hoppus bass, have for a quite some time. I generally am more of a Jazz bass guy, but that is about the only one where I think I like the P pups.

Jesus that's only 38 more than me :o
-
Quite like the look of these. Whether I'd buy one instead of a good ibanez, ESP, charvel etc. is another thing, but on some other forums they've been criticising them, and I don't think they're too bad...

Those were my thoughts as well!

Yeah I love it except I'm more used to the smaller jazz bass neck. It's much easier to play
-
Well, it's not a bad idea to reissue the M3. I don't mind the mahogany or the dirty fingers, but they should have kept the original switching scheme.
-
I had a black MIII. Good, versatile guitar, so-so pickups. All in all I liked my Jem better in the eighties/nineties and I sold the guitar.
-
I've never played one, but it looks different... I'm not opposed to trying one out though, assuming quality control is not an issue here.
The thing I really don't like is the Gibson 6 on a side headstock... never did, never will. I have never used the Gibson dirty fingers pickups, but the guitar would probably get painkillers if I got it...
-
i didnt realize they had dirty fingers pickups. i've used one in one of my strats for close to a year now and its a pretty solid all around rock pickup. but i mainly gave it a shot because i'm a shameless tom delonge fan. i'm thinking of switching it out for a crawler or holy diver (or something else completely, who knows) one of these days.
