I have a new guitar with an alder body, it's odd, I never thought there'd be so much difference in sound, but there is. This alder sounds a lot deeper and darker than the basswood which I am used to, normally really bright and thin, almost opposite it seems. So, what do I put in the bridge of this for heavy distorted 80's glam metal lead tones? I like tones from people like Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, Reb Beach, Vai, Mattias Eklundh. bare in mind the body wood. this has rosewood board and a maple neck

I think that would be VHII territory.

COLD SWEAT!

I dunno man, the VHII is a low output pickup compared to what those guys I mentioned use. I found that I didn't get on with the low output Emerald pickup which I used before, nice pickup, but not powerful enough. So, I think that a high output pickup is necessary, unless a few more tell me otherwise.

COLD SWEAT!
I'll see if I can find some clips
-
that's odd, my basswood rg is all mids- my alder kramer is brighter, and has more bass too... :o
-
what do the makers think?
-
I think a cold sweat would do the job nicely.
-
Cold Sweat or Miracle Man.......either will give a great tight bass response without getting too dark in the mids.In this instance a Nailbomb could be too much if you feel the Alder is that dark as the NB has a strong and broad mid.
I've played alot of alder bodied S style guitars and they really work for me, especially if you're doing that hi gain shred material.
-
alright, I'll go with the miracle man, I have a question first though, i have to take emg-hz passive stock pickups out of it. Although they're EMG, they are passive, and have 500k pots, so can I leave the electrics in the guitar?
-
Yep, 500ks will be fine............some players go up to 1 meg pots with hi gain p/ups but I've always been fine with 500k.
-
done.
-
1 Meg pots work really well with duller sounding pickups like high gain Dimarzios and Duncans, it helps try and open them out. The harmonics you get from the scatterwinding process remove the mush from the BKP high output pickups so 500ks work great.
-
I thought because it was EMG there'd be a difference impedence(sp)? or something, but I have spare pots even if these don't work.
When I get the pickup delivered, I'll post a clip of it in the players section.

25k pots are usually used with active pickups
-
it's only active EMG's like the 81/85/89 etc.. that need to change the pots.
the HZ's are passive like DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, BKP etc.

I know, ive already fitted the mm. I have 85 in my one guitar, but the mm sounds better. I had an emerald before, and a blackdog, but not enough power for me, the mm is ace, through a shite wanky amp too.
