Title: What £200... Now a NGD
Post by: Lew on October 09, 2013, 06:33:02 PM
I've not bought a budget guitar for yonks so I'm out of the loop. I need a 6string in std for teaching. A strat would be preferable but guessing a hardtail might be better at that price?

It used to be the Pacifica 112 at that price - used is fine.

Using my tuned diwn 7string isn't the most practical and new students get confuzzled over the low string!

Ta!

squier classic vibe's are pretty amazing for the money, not sure if you could get one for £200 but maybe second hand?

Yamaha Pacifica are amazing though, probably better.

Epiphone G-400 would do the trick.  Small, easy to handle, Grover tuners that should rarely go out of tune.  You can probably get on in a hard case for that price.  I wouldn't go for a cheaper Epi than that though.  Get one with Grovers if you get one, it will make life easier

Pacifica for my money.

Cheers! I quite fancy the idea of an SG. Infact I've been gassing for a Jaydee for ages. They're not exactly budget, though haha. I think a Strat might be more sensible. Had a look on ebay and didn't realize how cheap the 112 sells for used! Could throw some money at better tuners too.

Aye, although Pacificas are popular, the depreciate in value a lot more than Fenders or even Squiers. Usually pretty solid, even when used.

So, what BKPs are you going to put in this thing?  :P

I would go straight for a Pacifica if I was after a budget guitar.

Even though it's been around forever, no-one else seems to have grasped the idea of making such a great guitar at that price - they always seem to be tempted to add bling rather than simple, quality features.

I use, and have used a Pacifica for teaching for for the last 9 years. My first one lasted 6yrs of 4 days a week constant work, then it needed a re-fret so i sold it on.. the quote for the re-fret was £120.. sold the guitar for £50. For a few years after that i used my mexican strat, which was my backup gigging guitar. Then sold that to a student, and i bought a Jap strat. Recently i went back to a Pacifica, found a used one on ebay with a gig bag for £40! it has one chip in the paint and a missing trem arm, other than that its perfect.

 one pickup would be worth the same as the guitar

The Pacifica's are nice for the money. I like the necks of the Classic Vibes better. I would also have a look at Vintage.

I was going to say a Vintage v6, but I don't know if it's better bang for buck than a Pacifica 112.

Why would you need a budget guitar for teaching  :? ? It's just a general question as i understand the OP is playing 7-strings guitars...I would guess the students do bring their own guitars ?

Must be kids who travel there on the bus/train

I would also think as a teacher (.....a situation I can only imagine.... God help anyone who asked me for lessons.....) there might be something to be said for using a guitar similar to the ones your students might own.

It could make the whole thing seem more approachable/attainable, rather than sitting with your Squier watching your teacher whizzing around the fretboard of his £3,000 PRS.

That way they learn an early lesson that it's not all about gear.

It's a fair question. Yea, some students come straight from school and the studio is in town so it's not always practical for them to drag a guitar around all day (not a problem for most). And, yea what Philly said. Some students are in awe and dig playing a custom built axe (I let them use it) but some students are clearly disturbed and confused by it - it is a disturbing axe :-D

But the biggest reasons are because it's hard for a beginner to follow a visual example with that extra string which is made doubly worse by me playing either half a step or a whole step down depending on my mood. 11-66 suck in standard tuning!

Yeah,it def. makes sense if your axe is a 7-strings custom built  8) ! I still remember my first classical guitar teacher : i was  going there mainly to watch him play his 60's Ramirez  ! I didn't really care for the guitar, per se,but i just wanted to watch/hear him play.Unfortunately,it didn't last very long (he moved away..) but it gave me a big boost and i still remember the feeling..

I had a similar thing but it was with a 60s SG. Lovely thing.

Went into the local on the off-chance and they did indeed have a Pacifica.

It's been modded (for better or worse) with a killswitch 0_o a BCRich bridge pup and a Super500 (whatever that is) neck pup. 9/10 condition - the frets don't have any wear which is what I was looking for. No dead spots and low action.  £70. It'll do the job nicely  8)

Replace that scratchplate assembly and it doesn't even look like a budget model.  They are very, very nice guitars.

Cool - that's a total win any way you look at it.

Also psychologically having a budget guitar and making it sound awesome reminds your students that it's the practicing that is most important to their progress at this stage.

Exactly, Jon :-)

I'm really impressed with it so far. Makes me wonder how good the expensive ones are.

Pacifica 112 or, based on how impressed I am with the Vintage V100 I just bought; some kind of Vintage.

Nice score! A friend of mine has a couple of Pacifica guitars and I have played and really enjoyed.

Congrats.
