Title: Gibson Les Paul Classic with Rebel Yell set
Post by: littleredguitars2 on October 19, 2013, 10:10:32 PM
FINALLY got this baby home. my tech is great but he's usually got a lot of things to take care of so it was about 10 days i was without it. so far this is the main gist of how i feel

Loving the les Paul so far. The rebel yell pickups sound similar to the ones that were in it before but they are much clearer. The 500t bridge pickup was a bit harsher on the highs and this new one fixed that for sure. the neck pickup especially is a lot better than the old 496r. The new volume pots and capacitors are much better as well. Faster and better sounding pots for sure. I'll probably post a video tomorrow of a little review.

and YES i havent forgotten that people suggest tweaking the pickup height since its sensitive to it and i have been.

Did you pimp your standard to look like a custom?

I would have thought it would sound more different from the 500T - I'm assuming you hear a clearer difference between the 496R and the RY neck - given that the latter is ceramic and (from memory) hotter in terms of specs.  How are the cleans by comparison?  I find that the cleans on the various BKPs I've had in my SG (which had a 490R/498T set) - including CS neck, A-bomb bridge, and CS bridge - have all been much better than those on the stock set.

Have you tried adjusting your amp settings?  You might find that you have a broader range of settings that you like now

I definitely do need to mess with my amp settings a bit.  I love the current settings for my strats but maybe I need something completely different for my lp

Good job on the clip, and IMHO an accurate representation of the RY set - love mine in my LPC.

Cheers Stephan

Nice clip.

Listening to the clip it's obvious that the RY set is warmer sounding than my CS set, as I expected.  I didn't think the RY sounded overly bright, it seems around the same as the CS in that respect, although the CS is probably more scooped with more down low.

Indeed the neck pickup sounds great too. It's just a very well balanced set overall.

Cheers Stephan

As a neck pickup hater who loves his CS neck I knew you'd like the RY neck ... the CS and RY necks are closely related and both great pickups, the differences between them mainly being to match each better with their respective bridges in terms of overall tonality.  They seem to respond the same way.

I'd love to have a RY set one day

Nice.  I used to have a RY set but replaced the bridge with an ABomb for added ooomph.  The neck RY is superb.  Not usually a neck pickup fan (seems to be a common theme) but the RY I really really like.  Have put the NB/RY in my custom at the moment and it just sounds great (pic below).  Congrats on the pickups.

I don't tend to like things too bright and that's especially been the case since I got the Crawler so as a result I've generally dismissed the Rebel Yell as being too bright but perhaps the EQ chart doesn't tell the whole story. May a lot of the mids are low mids, giving it a darker and warmer sound than the EQ chart suggests. I may have to reconsider my view of the Rebel Yell.

Yeah I really want to get a crawler some day.  I think it would suit one of my strats well.  It was also one of the first pickups of bk's that I took notice to
