Getting pretty serious with a band right now. Ive been using my mesa boogie dual rectifier for a few months and I love the crunch I get. But I'm afraid to gig with it with out getting it looked at. Plus I want a backup anyway. Thoughts? Been looking at marshall, black star , peavey and more. I recently sold my old peavey valve king which would have been fine. Just bad timing... can be tube or solid state. Hoping for around 100 watts
-
I'm also thinking Maybe the new orange cr120. Seems to good to be true for the price though
-
Not including what you can get for 2nd hand I always think that bugera look very good for the money and also Laney if you just go over your budget by a little.
-
Are the EVH 5150 III amps a good price where you live? If so I'd look into those

they are a bit pricier than i want to spend at the moment

oh i forgot about those 2. i'll look into them

I wouldn't look into Bugera, whenever I have dealt with them, they always seem to break. Maybe look into Jet City, I've heard some very good things about them.

Bugera used to have a bad rep but over the past 2 years theyve sorted out whatever problems they used to have.
Prior to that they had a very very bad rep but now theyre extremely good value.
I would have said Jet City but I didnt realise they were under £500 so thats cool.
Ive not heard the new orange solid state properly and i appreciate your budget but if you can get a 2nd hand rockerverb you wont be disappointed.
You could always get an extended warranty on the bugera but lets face it with more money comes more reliability generally any way. Having said that I bought two separate hughes and kettner coreblades and both broke within several hours and that was like 1500 quids worth of amps..... no wonder jeff waters doesnt endorse them any more.
I've had my rockerverb for 6-8 years done hundreds of gigs and had it in the back of my car gods knows how many times and never ever had a problem with it.....ive only changed the tubes once and maybe they could do with a change but theyve never ever blown either. Its weights a fair bit though

I think the most expensive jet city is £368 new direct.
In my experience bugeras arent even worth the parts they're made of. Unreliable cheap no name junk

There's a big difference between 500 dollars and pounds haha. I was looking at the bugera 1990. Nice price and the tone sounds relatively what I'm looking for. There are good reviews but also some awful ones so I'm not sure. ..
-
The common opinion is theyre awful and back in the day they used to set on fire and allsorts but they really have sorted all that out. Look for comparison vids on youtube up against the big amps and youll see how good they are if youre worried ring sqaure trade up and get your own warranty.

They dont sound awful to me.
-
Well the"awful"reviews were more about reliability than tone.
-
No fair enough I mean I know Toe-Knee makes amps so I respect his opinion but ive seen people gig these regularly first hand and they sound spot on and they didnt create any fire hazards or stop working!
If you got a some warranty on it for 60-80 quid youve not lost owt imo.

Ahh I didn't realise it was $

The few people I have known to own them had no issues until the warranty was out.
One did have them during the warranty though and did get it replaced free of charge.

You might also consider Orange Dual Terror. 2 channels (Tiny Terror and Fat) can be run on different power modes like 7W, 15W, 30W ect, small size (VERY easy to transport from venue to venue and easy to carry around),
powerful 30W (looks not too much, but trust me in smaller places you can blow the roof away), not that expensive though, easy to set up (lack of million knobs and switches), reliable, good clean sounds (but quite distinctive in my opinion, have to get used to it or like it :P) and nice distortion (not hi gain but you can run distortion pedals in front of it).
The only bad thing about that amp is lack of FX loop.
I have one myself and cannot complain at all. I run it through 2x12 Orange open cab and run distortion pedals in front of it. Good small head if you carry your equipment a lot. (lunchbox type),
you can see it on my avatar photo
-
Apparently you can buy 5150s and 5150 mk2s in the USA for cheap second-hand. They're not cheap here second hand though. Worth looking into for a backup, even if it needs a set of valves or a cap somewhere.
-
yeah i dont think the lunchbox size amps would work well for me. the rest of my band plays very loud.
and the used 5150s i've seen are around $800+ which is too much
-

size-wise don`t confuse Dual Terror with those really micro small 'Tiny Terror' or 'Dark Terror'. Dual is much bigger and don`t let the size fool you, it is loud as hell (all valve 30W) and trust me will be enough for small gigs/rehearsal and with bigger venues (e.g outdoor) mic it up and run it through PA (you would have to do that with any other amp anyway).
you can run it with 2x12 or even 4x12.
I was playing smaller gigs with it without PA and it was plenty (and volume wasn`t at 11 )
but you decide :D
-
if i did any of those, i'd probably go with the dark terror even though its the 1 channel. i love the tone that thing gets.
-

I´d go with the Jim Root Terror over that even. Seemed all around better when I played it. Also more versatile.
-
Yeah maybe. I never got the chance to try that one

Thats actually based on the rockerverb isnt it?

I believe so, yes.
Where the Dark Terror seemed like a bit of a one trick pony the Root seemed to do blues, rock and metal well and you could certainly get that Stone Sour sound too. Nicely tweakable too compared to the Tiny.
-
Yeah I remember reading it's based on the rockerverb. And apparently the new crush 120 head is also based on the rockerverb which is only $450
-
I've seen used 6505/+'s go for around the $500 mark quite a few times (don't ask how, since I'm in the UK).
There's always a second hand Laney IRT-120 as well.
-

I would look at (used) TH30 too. That drivechannel is based on the Rockerverb!

I actually had a th30 before my mesa and the lack of a real eq section was a pain
-

Well, if you don`t like the lack of real eq section Dual Terror is not for you, for sure. You dial desired tone by turning only one knob.
When it comes to Jim Root head, I was watching some interview with him some time ago and he was praising the versatility of his signature model. On the other hand if anyone is familiar with Anderson music store (UK) and Rob Chapman, knows that he favorites and praises Dark Terror a lot and puts it even before Mesa Mini Rectifier. Apparently he has Dark Terror always in his rig.
looks like it became Orange-fan based thread
-
Yeah I know both videos that you're referring to. I watched a lot of Orange gear videos. The dark terror is killer for tone but the mesa does have the Extra channel and more shiny knobs! Haha. I would love a dark terror combo amp too
-
Depends on the music you play, I would get a Bugera as they sound really good and make good testing amps and backups. My 6260 sounds MEAN.
-
I'll look into it. Thanks
-
bugeras are very unreliable
the newer ones have improvements, but are still not reliable enough to keep and gig
one of my best friends is one of the only 2 or 3 amp techs in our city, and there's always a bugera in his room
those new vietnam marshalls are quite ureliable as well
go jet city or randall (the new ones! avoid anything randall from before 2011 or so, unless it's an 80's or early 90's one)
the randall rd45h is absolutely killer and it's $599 new
-
Engl Screamer (used)? Four channels!
-
thanks again for the suggestions. i really appreciate it and i like checking out new gear.
-
any of you use blackstar amps? i've been curious about them for a while. i'm more of a mesa or peavey style of modern gain type of guy but i'm still wondering about these. they have that UK type of voicing right? do they sound similar to oranges?
-
I had a Series One 100 for 2 years. If you play rock or blues, brilliant. Metal? Nah. The 104's fixed some of my complaints with it, but I'd still take a Mesa or Peavey over one (although I had a Peavey too, and that's gone too  )
I've not tried the new Blackstar HT Metal amps though.

I was looking at Blackstars a while ago as well, they are made by ex-Mershall employees or something. There`s a rumor that apparently James Hetfield is gonna get his signature Blackstar model. Time will tell...
-
i think i've decided to get a Peavey 5150 or 6505. i dont care if either are the "plus" model. i'm trying to sell my bass right now so that'll help towards the sale. i've seen them used around $600-700. and the reviews speak for themselves.
-
The 6065+ (5150 II) is a very nice amp, I personally prefer it to the 6065 (5150). I prefer the separate EQs. You can set up your clean sound in the rhythm channel and your distorted sound on lead with different EQ, resonance, and presence levels.
If you get it second hand just make sure the footswitch is in good condition. They are expensive and you will find yourself using it a lot. Also check that the loop works properly. You switch that on using the footswitch.
I have also been surprised at the sound of the Peavey cabs, given the bad reviews they sometimes get around the internet. Try it, you might like it, and if you are offered a package deal with the amp and cab together cheap enough I'd say go for it. They have an oversized cab
-
I'll keep those things in mind. I usually have my eq's similar for clean and lead sections so it may not be a problem. I don't plan to buy another cab right now. Maybe another 2x12 at some point and I can set up an ABY pedal to mix them. I've been using an egnater 4x12 cab at practice. Not sure what speakers are in it but my mesa sounds great through it.
