The kiddy that I am teaching is a complete begginer. He took a lot on board and within an hour he could actually do something with his axe!
Sorry to blurt but just v cool, thought I would share with my forum buddies. :D

I was advised to charge £20 an hour which I thought was a bit steep! So I have decided upon a tenner. How much are you paying?

£16 or maybe 17 cant actually remember AND my tecahers only like 24 or something so he ends up talking about how when he has a kid hes gonna make him learn left-handed guitar and how he got wasted last night....

anyway well done to you for making it a tenner... i think anything much higher than that is pretty steep like you said- but its not me thats paying!  :P

hope it goes well...

5 years ago I was paynig £15 an hour, which went up to £17 per hour, before my teacher decided he was only doing half hour lessons and was charging £12.

I quit when he went to £12 per half hour, for both the money aspect and the fact I wasn't learning enough in the time period...  that might also be because I'd been with the teacher for so long he didn't have much left he could pass on to me.

£17 seemed fair enough though when I thought I was getting enough out of it.

I think £15 while you build a reputation is a fair price to charge.

£10 for music lessons is selling yourself short IMO :)

mmm its a trickt one.... spose it depends on what youve got to offer/how experienced you are and what and who your teaching....

i would have stopped as well at £12 for 30 minutes.... thats ridiculous...

Yeah it does.

If youv'e got several years of playing under your belt, are proficient to a high degree in several styles and can read sheet music - those are some pretty good credentials, and quite specific skills.

It takes 3 years to get a degree to get you into a graduate level job, that will probably pay more than guitar teaching will..

Guitar playing is lifetime thing and a skill that takes a long time to develop to a "teaching" standard.

I have played since I was 13, or there abouts, and I am now 26, I feel that I have a lot to teach and a lot to learn but I don't think that you ever stop learning! I am now trying to really get my head around the heavy theory side of it all and what I have gleaned so far has brought my playing along in leaps and bounds. I never had lessons but I have seen some terrible teaching and I want to achieve a real high standard of the understanding of guitar.

Sounds like it was a good lesson! Best part about giving lessons is that it reinforces the basics on you as a teacher, too.

All of you guys are getting a good break! I charge about $1/min for lessons. 30 min = $30, 45min = $40. A double lesson is $60.

Yeah I was checking out the national registry for local teachers the other day - figure I might as well do some learning - and the top guy in my area is £25 an hour. I'm obviously not able to afford that right now but I'll give it a shot for a lesson or two, and if it's worth it I'll stick at it.

Teaching is fun, eh?  :D

So what did you teach him?

I loved it when kids actually asked to be taught something.  The ones that were difficult were the ones that just kinda shrugged when you asked what they wanted to learn, what they liked to listen to, etc.

Oh, and £10 seems too cheap.  People will think you have less to offer than more expensive guys if you cheap out on your fees.  Unless you think you do have less to offer, you might wanna raise your price, before you get more students and have to tell 'em all that your fees are going up.

I wish I had the patience to teach people stuff. I tried teaching a beginner at school some basic single string riffs and I just got so frustrated...

My teacher has a Degree in music (studied guitar as primary) and charges me $18 half hour. Just for reference (he is VERY good btw).

The guy who taught me charged £20 and I did progress a fair bit until I reached a plateau. I ended up stopping as £80 a month was stopping me from going out for a beer. I do regret stopping taking lessons as I could do with some help at the moment, but I'm not sure whether he could show me what I wanted to learn now (even though he is an awesome player).

He's a guy called Paul Condie. He was doing a promotional video when I finished - Steve Vai stuff. I can give you his mobile number if you want.

I had lessons with John Mizarolli a year ago. He charged me around £420 for 16 hours one to one but i got more than that in the end. It was very challenging and I found it hard work but it was well worth it. He gave me these legato exercises using major scales (3 notes per string) which I've never really done before. I'm sort of 3/4's there with that even after a year but It's that last fine tuning bit of the technique that isn't quite there yet. After I'd cracked that he said come back and see me but don't be surprised if it takes you 2 years!

He is an incredible player as I've said before in here.

I did try £20 an hour then £15 but Devon isn't really what you would call a wealthy area and I would rather have three students learning guitar paying a tenner then 0 students paying me 0.
For the first lesson with this kid he came in with a really messed up way of fingering chords and he only knew E and D. I helped him with his form and got him changing between E,D and G, explained to him about the cycle of notes and string names etc etc. I want the people I teach to take on board some of the theory as I think that really is overlooked in some lessons, and I am trying to get some sort of relationship going with the school to compliment what they are learning there. And at the end of the day it is all good experiance as I am doing a degree in music with the aim to be a Teacher/Tutor. (Unless Devon Guitar School takes off!)

If there was anyone near me who could play ANYTHING like that, I'd be going to learn off him in an instant!

There are basically no good teachers where I come from, my teacher's picking style (And now I think of it, general PLAYING) is total slop, and he knows shite all about theory. He says modes are "basically just pentatonic scales with a few extra notes added on"...

NO! WRONG!

No wonder all the little kids these days are total cr@p! I only really learnt what I know on the guitar from the internet, and from watching good guitarists play and trying to copy.

Yet another downfall of living in a small town :x

Nice one on the lesson man!

Keep it up - And make monies for more BKPs...

But yeah, I pay £20 for my lessons although I think he asked for less (my dad's used to paying £50 for piano lessons, so he thought 16 was too little...). They're with a guy called Nick Michaelson here in North London, he's guitar in a band called Senser, and a thoroughly nice guy.

He knows his theory, which I find damn confusing for the most part.

And best of all - He has BKPs (although I think he got them by accident since they came in a Black Machine he bought.... The telecaster in the gallery on the website with the fully scalloped neck :p).

A mate of mine charges £20 per hour for lessons IIRC.  He's a GIT graduate and pro guitarist (does session work, lessons and is also "Richie" in Bon Jovi tribute band Bon Jovie).

Here's a video of his improvised Purple Rain solo: http://www.bonjovie.co.uk/sounds/geoffpurple.wmv

Geoff Lea his name is, and he's based in Southampton now.

Fantastic player and an all round good guy.  :D
