Title: Marshall AVTs, anyone?
Post by: HTH AMPS on March 12, 2006, 08:19:26 PM
I played a Marshall 50w AVT (valvestate 2000) head at a rehearsal studio today, I was pleasently surprised at how good it was.  If anyone has one for sale (50, 100, 150w - not bothered), I'd be interested in it as a spare.

I've got one but right now I'm not ready to split with it. Unless you're willing to trade it for an Engl Fireball... 8)

I have an AVT 50 I'm considering selling as it's sitting in Belfast doing nothing but the problem is that I hate parting with anything :(

I have to say thats an amp that sounds OK to me (the Wolfgang sounds pretty good through it)

For some reason, the general consensus seems to be that the AVT50 combo is superior in tone to the heads. Don't ask me why - I haven't compared them, but they're very versatile beasts, for their price.

I tried the 50 watt combo tha Billy Gibbons is using onstage and it was nice, but had to be played loud. It sounded nothing special at bedroom levels though.

Most amps sound shitee at bedroom levels, just accept that and get over it - you will save alot of money in the long-run.

I had a Line6 SpiderII head before xmas that was pretty decent once you tweaked it in.  They still need some decent volume to sound their best, but I always crank valve amps LOUD in any case (volume isn't much of an issue with me, heh).

I was just really surprised at how good the AVT50 sounded through a bog standard Marshall 4x12 - it really wasn't a million miles away from my valve head I used on the Warpig clips and doesn't put your back out trying to carry it.

How much do they cost in the shops (new)?

Thats accepted, but this Crate sounded cr@p in a most spectacular way, and I wanted to like it.

The AVT50 can at least be tolerated at low levels, and sound much better at volume (nicer with humbuckers than single coil).

My Fender is only 15 watts but is way too loud for bedroom (it sounds amazing on single coils when up full), I'm actually looking at retubing it down to about 7.5 watts ir putting an attenuator in it.

I tried a crate blue voodoo and it sucked majorly, but i didn't get to crank it. (it was the 300watter, so that probably had something to do with it!)

My engl sounds awesome at bedroom levels, and even better as you turn it up, but that's because it's really high gain, so you can let the preamp do all the work at lower volume levels.

Just to let everyone else know, heavier than hell is only after the head version not the combo- that kind of fooled me when he said he'd be interested in the 100watt version, because as far as I know, the 100 watter only comes in combo form. No worries, though, HTH, you got back to me super quick! Cheers!

Oh yeah, the avt50 head goes for around £185 new, according to www.gak.co.uk, so if you were willing to give what you said in the PM you sent, you could pretty much get it new- or aim to get it second hand for around £100 or less, I'd have thought (second hand stuff is normally around half price, right?)

Damn, I've got a mint 100 watt combo up for grabs, and what with me wanting that transformer HTH we could have done a nice neat swap!

heh, I just assumed they'd do a 100w version but it looks like they just went from the basic model straight to the bells & whistles model

£185 brand new from GAK ain't bad at all, might just get that - gotta see if some other deals come off first though.

Underground_Player, are you after that Drake OT from me?

Probably, but it depends on how strongly 5F6-A feels about MM OTs (see other thread)!

Bear with me 'cos I'll need to talk it through with the guy who's fixing the amp as well.

Basically I'm very indecisive.
