Title: Running shoes - what should I look out for?
Post by: Alex on January 02, 2014, 09:08:59 PM
I kind of know how to run ;-)

But I used to wear the same old shoes for over 6 years, until they really started to fall apart. So then I went out and bought some new Nike, but I hate them and they hurt my ankles (quite stiff).

I'm gonna buy some new ones this weekend probably... what should I look out for? I wore my brothers twice this week and they were very light and very soft, I liked the feel a lot more. At time it almost felt as if I was running barefoot. Is that ok?

Maybe some here can share thoughts on this...

The place I'm going to (Braintree) has Nike, Asics, Puma and Addidas stores.

If you are going to be doing decent amounts it's well worth going to a good running shop - trying lots and ideally looking at your gait on a running machine/video analysis -  good running shops offer this for free.... (I am a triathlete who has had lots of achilles problems)

I was going to say something similar, although I'm not convinced they spend long enough on the process to really assess what shoes might be best for you.

The other bit of advice I was given was to buy shoes at least half a size bigger than your normal size, because your feet will swell a bit when running.

I guess all these considerations are less important if you're not someone who's prone to particular injuries or problems.  I have a dodgy lower back and I get shin splints.... my solution was to not run any more!

Shopping in Braintree Freeport?

Some of the outlet stores there are quite good

And you can eat at the Tutti Tuscan Grille, then burn it off with your new running shoes!  :P

I'd get the ones where you can match the colour of your top to your shoes

Yep, Freeport  :D . I might drive down to Peach Guitars as well, though I really shouldn't... car insurance coming up this month as well.

BTW last time I went to the TGI Fridays there, and both me and my wife were shocked at the amount of really obese guests and waiters... really puts you off kind of.

It's funny, my friend must live really close to Peach Guitars (judging by the postcode) but whenever I visit I've never dared ask her to take me there.  Seems unfair to expect her to hang around while I goggle at guitars..... but it might be dangerous to leave me there unsupervised.  :|

I have good experience with Aesics. Not cheap, but strong, good support and 'suspension'.

Tell her you want to visit the Blake House Craft Centre and see what's on offer there. Depending on how obvious you are, she'll know what you're up to or not... until it's too late! :-)

She's known me too long to believe I'd want to visit a Craft Centre!
