Title: What is the Jensen BKP capacitor use for?
Post by: jka807126 on January 11, 2014, 10:01:08 AM
Hi, What is the Jensen BKP capacitor use for?
https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_70&products_id=199&zenid=d47f57dd36a766e24eb3a4af2a1b2f87 (https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_70&products_id=199&zenid=d47f57dd36a766e24eb3a4af2a1b2f87)
Does it make sound better?
Can anyone share experience of it?
Thank you!

Basically capacitors change the voicing of your tone pot and route high frequencies away from the signal that goes into the amp. It`s like a 'filter'. You can 'shape' the overall sound while your guitar sounds a bit too bright or dark generally speaking.
They have different values which you choose from to achieve results you`re looking for.
They are soldered to the tone pots.

Do the Jersen caps make difference?
Well, they are high-end, top quality indeed. Be careful, size-wise they are big, and sometimes would be hard to fit them in in guitar`s cavity.

I have Jersen caps on both Tone pots in my Dean and they do make a difference.
I can only compare it with bridge pickup `cause while replacing neck pup (now both BKP) I was putting caps at the same time. So had stock cap only with bridge BKP for a while. New caps came with new neck BKP. But even on bridge, it was sounding a bit better.

On the other hand, they`re not that expensive (in terms of caps, they are... I know) but generally speaking. So why not to get those top-end high quality ones instead some cheap cr@ppy china made? :D

Jensen caps are made to very high std and they sound very smooth. Whether they are the the right ones for you you can only decide. Caps have a significant effect on tone, even at 10.

The 550 capacitors for Humbuckers  are supposed to make the sound more clear but for some reason the 500 is the average.

That is also a lot about the tolerance. Normal pots usually have a tolerance of 10%+- so when you buy a 500k pot there is a chance youŽll get a 550k or a 450k pot. These divergences in value make a noticable difference in sound and 100k possible difference is a lot. Anyone who has tried running a HB on SC valued pots, 250k, knows this all too well.
Thing with the BKP pots is that they are on the high end of the "normal" spectrum with very low tolerance, so you can be pretty sure you get what you pay for.

The slightly higher value does a similar thing to what scatterwinding does, adding that extra highend, overtones, etc, but in the case pots it is more about letting them get out to the amp. Nothing you usually wanne overdo, but getting these BKP pots ensures that you get good quality, low tolerance pots, which make sure that your PUs are not inhibited by them. Not to say that you canŽt get this elsewhere, but ususally it is more of a gamble due to tolerance.
