Continuing from a post in the "Pickups" board, I've been swapping around some of my pickups and these BK Crawlers have ended up in this Fender Showmaster. Previously I had all black open-coil Seymour Duncan Custom 5 and Jazz pickups in there, which gave it a nice subtle look, but as you can see the Crawlers are in a Zebra finish and although they sound great in their new home, and the black and cream bobbins match the black body/neck and cream binding of the guitar, I'm not sure about the overall look. To me it looks a little too 80's. What do you think?
-
In my honest opinion it doesn`t look too bad, really. At least you have that cream binding with matches with cream coils. Looks all right, I would leave it like that, no doubt.
-
It looks okay, but I would have went with all cream.
Personally I don't like black hardware much though and that's probably affecting my judgement. It just seems to be very black.
-
Looks alright. I reckon straight black would be better, though. Cool guitar 8)

that`s even better ideal, pure killer. But like I mentioned earlier it`s still looks great though.
To be honest I wouldn`t go all-black, in my opinion it would look 'cheap' and boring comparing to zebra or cream.

I quite like it how it is. Definitely not too 80s.

Needs cream rings
Agreed!
I don't think it looks '80s, but I do think the zebras make it look more classy/classic.
-
From a style point of view you kind of need to play up to the black and cream colour scheme - irrespective of decade
The cream binding begs to be echo-ed by the colour of the pickups or rings
Style wise it's more an art deco or maybe a 50s thing to my eyes - although it would look cool in any decade

I think this would look good, as long as the cream on the rings is a good match for the bobbins ...
-
Cheers guys, it's good to be reassured that the guitar doesn't look ridiculous and that I don't have to grow a mullet! Although I might try some cream pickup rings.
-
If you think that looks too 80s you should see some of my guitars

Yeah, I'm confused because people seem to be insinuating "looks 80s" is a bad thing?? :? :o

Afghan Dave, 80s is cool even nowadays but guitar-wise not that clothing... Haven`t seen many people dressing like that on stage in recent times. SPANDEX rulezzzz! yeah! :D sorry for off-topic but really had to do it :D

I must admit, I don't even know who that is.... :?

I dig the xzebra look of that guitar! Defenitely not 80s in my book. And if zebras are 80s well they're 80s in a good and cool looking way.

In the late 80s I had a similar looking guitar which had all black pickups and rings but chrome hardware. I think it looks great as is - a bit of a contrast makes it more interesting than going all black. Personally I believe I'd prefer the zebra look over the double cream in that guitar - too much of a contrast could make the pickups look like they don't belong on this guitar. That is also the reason I would leave the black rings.
