Title: So, if you had about £1000 available
Post by: Lew on January 26, 2014, 06:45:20 PM
what guitar would you buy?

I don't really need another guitar but it's been three years so I think I'm due one. Because I don't need one it means I'm not tied into a style - just for it to be fun and decent. The sensible thing to do would probably be to put it down on a custom build and wait a couple of years but I'm not too sure I can be arsed to do the wait.

An SG std would be in budget and fun but I'd probably have to play loads till I found one that was spot on and I'm a bit funny about Gibsons. Plus I'd spent a good £300+ changing bits on it.

There's this cool Rickenbacker on sale. Fancied a Rick for awhile - it's not a classic model but probably more appropriate for me with humbuckers and a wide neck. Only draw back I can see is it looks like you're stuck with those pickups. http://www.coda-music.com/rickenbacker-650c-colorado-p-14028.html?oscsid=dca4bc2c96759c28f4b03aa8117e68a8 (http://www.coda-music.com/rickenbacker-650c-colorado-p-14028.html?oscsid=dca4bc2c96759c28f4b03aa8117e68a8)

A half decent Japanese Ibanez, perhaps. I do love them when they are done right - although the £900 RG I played the other day was a bit poor. Square fret tops and bad finishing. The £1100 PGM was lovely, though - the blue and pink 80s job.

How about a nice MJTele build. After you're done with customs and setup it's probably over budget.

Are Greco and Burny making new guitars? I only ever see 'em used.

Inspire me!

Personally I have a strong GAS for a Hagstrom Viking Baritone. The black flamed one. I mean it´s a semi-hollow baritone. Looks just wow and if you were to put BKPs in that baby...my, my my...well, that is what I am perhaps most hungering for at the moment (even more than a tele).

I dunno  The way prices are at the moment, £1000 is a slightly funny budget, it's kind of just below the really good stuff but it's enough that you don't want to end up with a mediocre guitar either. Sometimes you can get good deals though as you suggested, and if you're really easy on the style and just want a good, fun guitar and to maximise how good of a guitar you're going to get for your money, that might be the way to do it.

Yes - but you are studying making beer - so we kind of are jealous of you anyway.

Nah, I actually study English (believe it or not...I just don´t watch my spelling and grammar too closely here) in Sweden. Brewing beer is just a hobby for me. Though I do actually do more studying regarding that than for my studies now that I think about it...

Once my income gets more predictable I will move from getting pickups and other smaller things and start putting down on a Feline custom. Just wanne get started on that when I know I can finish it in a reasonable amount of time.

PS: Now I am thinking what a BKP beer would be like...damn it. Maybe a clear and crisp english ale, around 7%, nice mouthfeel, but rather dry than sweet, the maltbackbone warm and slightly caramelly with a hint of grainyness and an air of smoke. In terms of hops a little over what you normally get. Clear and present, but non puckering or lingering bitterness, a nice earthy, slightly grassy flavour with some fruit and honey notes (Fuggles and East Kent Golding perhaps) and a bit of dryhopping with something more unusual for the style, maybe Pacific Gem (blackberry among other things) for the nose.
Ok, I just had to get that out of my system. And now I have something I shall attempt to brew sometime in the future. =)
Sorry for the sidetrack^^

Then spend some of what remains on some pups...

However there are a couple of things I'm not keen on with it (bound neck & trem), so I'd take it as inspiration for a custom build to keep another forumite busy ;) Indeed that's giving me very bad ideas...

I would search for a real good old Tokai, Greco, Orvile or Burny Les Paul.
Or a used Valvetech VAC 22 handwired 6v6 amp.

mouthfeel ... maltbackbone ... dryhopping

I think these are all 'Swenglish' ... I am on a Swedish metal forum and we had a big discussion about Swenglish and 'coldbeer' one time; one American learned to do it so well he could construct whole conversations in Swenglish and had the Swedish guys in stitches

I wish I was able to do Swenglish already xD Since I can not detect possible sarcasm: All just beer and brewing terms.
Dryhopping for example is adding hops after fermentation so they don´t contribute to taste or bitterness, but only to smell. If you ever had an IPA, that is what makes those smell so freaking great and fruity.

On topic: This is also a price range where you would be able to get some pretty darn awesome second hand PRS guitars I would recon. Sure would be a lot of bang for the buck if you don´t wanne get started on a custom.

Swenglish is the odd conjunction of words like 'coldbeer' ... never used by native speakers, who might refer to 'a cold beer' ... apparently it comes from using Swedish grammatical rules in English, and some Swedish people know it is technically wrong but it doesn't hurt their ears and is convenient so they keep doing it. :)

Hagstrom Viking Baritone.

I've not played a Hagstrom. They look cool, though. Some dude who I'm subbed to on youtube uses a red Lespaul type.

The way prices are at the moment

Yea, it's strange. Remember when a good LesPaul std cost you £1200? I guess Fenders prices are more inline.

You'd use it as a deposit for something from me surely......

 and like I said Saturday I'd ask for it to be painted gloss black  Yea, I know that's the sensible option but it means coming up with another grand and being all patient and stuff. Those SGs were beautiful in the flesh, though as were they all. Especially Phillys Lion Cub, loved the neck profile on that. I'll be up about noon on Tuesday, Jon.

i'd get a nice used les paul probably

A Std? I'd much prefer an SG.

Personally this:

Weird, the binding and trem make it cooool. That MIJ or something?

I would search for a real good old Tokai, Greco, Orvile or Burny Les Paul.

No desire for an amp. Very happy with what I have.

But do they make Burny and Greco now?

I know £1000 would be alot better on the used market. I could probably buy a RG550 and SGstd or like ya said a cool furniture guitar but I dunno if I want used.

Agreed.  £1,000 sounds like a lot of money - and it is, of course! - but it really only gets you a mid-price guitar nowadays.

But for that £1,000, I'd get a PRS S2 Mira.  Unless I could miraculously find a Yamaha SG2000 weighing 8 pounds or less....

They do, but they're nowhere near as good as the old MIJ ones.

Apart from, probably, the Greco Zemaitis copies, but they are bloody expensive.

I had a PRS S2 Mira in and it was really nice - just needed better pickups - and we fitted Mules to it!

Yeah mine was new and I swapped out the 490/498 set for BKPs and installed a '50s style harness in place of the PCB.  I can see scope for possibly locking bridge and tailpiece studs and a TUSQ nut instead of the corian too, but those aren't as crucial as the pickup swap.  The 490R is a dog of a pickup, woofy +

Yeah, PGS had some in and I had someone in the States prepared to bring me one over too. But I resisted and was all sensible about it in the end. It is the first guitar in a long time to give me gas though and if I do go for something next it's likely to be hollow bodied.

They do it in H/H and S/S/S. PGS demos have the usual Andy-factor (where he makes everything awesome).

No, although it has crossed my mind seeing as it's a "big birthday" this year.  But as always, I'd have terrible trouble deciding on just one set of specs.

I think it was that Lew played it and commented on the fuller neck profile and i joked that I had to keep something in stock that Philly Q would like , just in case
Hence him referring to it as the Philly Q guitar.

Was it the Junior style Cub with the single MQ or the Lion Special with two humbuckers?

Both lovely guitars!

Actually I think there were two of the latter, Jon's one with block markers - that's an especially beautiful colour - and one with dots, I haven't tried the second one.  The Cub is an amazing colour too.

Yeah the prices have been shooting up. You can still get good guitars for under £1000 if you know what you're doing and/or get a good deal, but you can't just buy a random guitar at the guts of £1000 any more and expect it to be high end like you used to be able to not that long ago :(

Shame about Burny and Greco. MIJ Fenders are great.

You can still get Japanese Tokais. Unfortunately their prices have been shooting up, too. :(

Philly, just give in and treat yourself. You so deserve it. I am pretty sure most of the forum members would like to see it cause we know you would like it. Let´s face it, you are meant to own something like it and don´t have a proper excuse not to. unlike me. So get one and make not only your self, but also folks like me happy. Show me it is possible and that deserving it can lead somewhere. Then gift me some of the stuff from under your bed.

Did not work? Ok, worth a try thought. Still, seriously, treat yourself. I think a wise man once said something among the lines of "Drink it now, don´t put it in the wine cellar." So get that freaking bottle. ;)

Yeah I think so. I haven't tried any of the really newer ones since the dealer here shut, but I've tried several which were (presumably) made since 2000 and they all seemed pretty good to me. Mainly the Fender copies, though, it must be said. I've got a new(ish- I've had it for a few years now but I got it new) tele copy and an older (1980s) strat copy and they're both good.

That's the only older one I've tried, though, so :? Problem is if you ask 5 different people you'll get 5 different opinions...

Yea, I heard that they've made the MIJ Fenders since 97 - not sure how much truth there is in that but it's pretty ironic and made me chuckle.

I've made my mind up on what I'm going to get now, anyway  8)

I think they've made MIJ Fenders on occasion, but I think the MIJ Fenders were more often made by Dyna Gakki (don't quoite me on that), and according to wiki Fujigen made them originally. I know a few years back Tokai got rid of their fender copies and came up with slightly modified designs- I think they were building for fender then. Then the blatant Fender copies came back fairly soon afterwards which makes me think Fender stopped using them again.

No worries if you've already decided, though :D
