Title: Baseplates on Apache coils
Post by: musicispeace on February 02, 2014, 07:13:12 PM
About to order the Apache coils and am down to two remaining topics. I play blues and these will go into an ash guitar where I will use both the clean and gain channels on a value (tube) amp. Would baseplates alter the tone or just give it slightly more muscle when using gain? Also, my neck has a 10'-16' compound radius. Any thoughts on staggered or flat magnets. I watched the BKP video on the subject and I did like the dynamics of the staggered a bit better.

I've heard both accounts: that the baseplate adds bass and mids, and that it adds bass and highs. On an Apache set I personally would add it on the bridge only and use the neck and middle as designed.

For 10' and above I would use flat profile. Most brands recommend staggered for 7.25 only, but I use it on 9.5s too.

Baseplate only on the bridge. Apaches already sound quite full. A baseplate on the neck would make things a bit bassheavy.
With this radius I would stick to flat polepieces. I have flat Irish Tours in my swampashstrat with 12 inch radius. Balance is excellent.

So, if I understand correctly, the addition of a stainless steel base plate increases the magnetic strenght of the pole magnets by directing the magnetic field upwords. Then how will a stainless steel srip placed under the magnet aria under the base plate (or elsewhere?) of a humbucker affect the system?
