Title: Anyone familiar with Roger Mayer effects?
Post by: Lew on February 12, 2014, 05:15:45 PM
I'm getting a Voodoo Axe in a trade and there's not much on the net about it but from what I can gather it's a tweaked Axis fuzz (which there is lots of info on). Cheers!

They are high quality pedals and don't come very cheap. You have to be into fuzzpedals though.

Perhaps you read this already on tpdri.com:

It's basically a dirty boost that can go into fuzz territory. Has a nice warm-but-gritty tone to it. Put the Fatness close to full, then dial it back to cut the bass. It maybe adds a touch past 3 o' clock, but if so, it's subtle. Not sure. Output is output, gain is gain.

It's main strength is that it adds a touch of grit and subtly enhances note definition with chords. It's a little dynamic and responsive too. Really nice and simple, and seems like an "always on" type pedal for someone who's not really into using loads of pedals, and just wants a high quality simple dirt pedal for blues, country or rock. And it can give a nicely balanced, textured fuzz with the gain pushed up when required.

Ta, TR. I'll have it in a few days so I'll see for myself. Hopefully it will work with my core tone which is somewhere between a JMP and JCM800.

That should work since it's capable of doing modern tones as well. But it's always a bit of gamble with fuzzboxes. They don't always match the amp.

And I find that a fuzz pedal nearly always sounds better running thru a clean/gritty rather than overdriven amp. Aside from the MXR Blue Box.

Yea, that's been my experience too, Paddy which is why I've taken a punt on it. It was made (or a variation of it) to go infront of Hendrix' cranked Plexi, right? I'm really not using alot of gain by any modern standards. If it doesn't work with my sound then no biggie I'll put it up for sale and wont be any worse off. It was much easier when I was running a dead clean amp and lots of pedals but I love my Morgans overdrive and just want a fuzzier dimension available. I know it's a real challenge to marry fuzz and gain.

There are many fans of these pedals. Resale won't be an issue.

I had  a Voodoo Axe myself but could never get on with it. I've tried other fuzz pedals before and since and haven't liked any of them either, so maybe I'm just not a fan of fuzz

It does have a good buffer in it though if you use a lot of pedals, as I did at the time.

I recognize this. I'm not a big fuzz-fan either. I tried several, but I guess they're not for me.

Well, the guy messaged me to say he tried it and it wasn't working correctly so can't trade, d'oh!

That's weird. Perhaps he changed his mind. Those pedals don't fall apart that easy. I have early eighties Ibanez- en Boss-pedals and they're still working fine.

That was my first thought too but it's no biggie. He did offer up some other pedals he wanted to trade but I'll just keep an eye on the forums or ebay. Maybe an Axis will pop up. I want to try an Analogman Sunface too.

I've got a Bearfoot model H 4K from a different dude on its way. It's not a fuzz but it looks fun  8)

It sure does. Looks like a hotrodded Hiwatt in a box.

There are a few different Sunfaces available. I love mine!

I have an Axis rocket fuzz on its way to me as someone wanted to trade it for the above Bearfoot  :D

The Bearfoot was nice enough but for my needs Juans Tubescreamer trumped it in every way.

Built a Spitfire but never an Axis (same enclosure). The Spitfire is badass and an awesome fuzztortion.

As a Dutch guy I have to fancy that colour. I like the shape, but - being practical - not the knobs on the front.

Yep, not the most practical enclosure, it's mahoosive! Dead on same orange as my Orange cab. An led and psu input would be nice too. However, the thing sounds great! :D
