Title: amp = too bright
Post by: mia on March 15, 2006, 06:53:19 PM
imy Laney VC30 2X10 is too bright for my tastes...I was just wondering what ways i could lessen this. Its got ECC83 preamp valves and EL84 output valves and seventy 80 speakers.

Well I'd investigate different speaker types if the amp's too bright with everything, maybe some greenback RIs or something. Tonetubby are meant to be fantastic, but are also expensive.

I'd find a tech, too bright is easy to sort on most valve amps.

JJ ECC83S valves, problem solved.

I had the same complaint with the LC30, and the JJs sorted it out.

Those Laney VC amps look pretty good for the money- apart from the brightness, what do you think of it and was there any reason why you picked it. Did you, say, try it along a LC. I have a young neighbour in the market for an amp and his parents asked me for some guidance and your thoughts would be appreciated- thanks.

well, apart from the brightness, its gt a nice sound to it, quite bluesy. Its quite often linked with the Vox AC30 in tone. The overdrive channel is nice for driven blues to classic rock, but not much more.

Ive got a VC30 and, to be honest, im not too impressed by it. The reviews on Harmony central pretty much rave about it but to me its sounds quite sterile and metalic.  As Mia said, the drive channel can make some nice classic rock and driven blues sounds but not much more. I havent heard many other valve amps (all my m8s have line 6 spiders! ) to compare it to so i cant realy give much more of an evaluation.
Mind you, I have only realy turned it up a few times a while back, so it might sound a whole lot better with some power behind it. Im hopefully gonna have some irish tours soon so ill try and let you know what its like with better quality pickups aswell.

update...i got hold of a electro harmonix holy grail reverb pedal...and it tgakes quite alot of the edge of the amp...alot less brittle. Im quickly turning into a huge fan of this amp!

Just had a thought, have you had the amp long? I imagine once the speakers are "broken in" that a lot of the harshness will dissapear.

EL84s and 10" speakers sounds like a recipe for no bass which makes it sound like you have too much treble.

Those budget-model Celestions don't help matters much either.  Get some decent 10" speakers with heavy magnets, if you can find some V10s on ebay then they'd be a big improvement.

Try out some different ECC83s too, 'JJ' are a fairly dark sounding valve so they might just do the trick.

What sort of volume are you running the amp at when it sounds 'too trebley' ???? - you'll find that 90% of amps sound trebley at low volumes.

Trust me on this...

Laneys NEED JJ ecc83S in the pre-amp. I was told this advice and i didnt believe it up until i ve put some JJs in. It made TONS of difference.

To give you an idea, i had my treble at 4/10 with TAD tubes, and still the treble was harsh and unusable. Now with JJs i have it at 6-7 and it is there sweet and useable.
