Title: Weird pain in my chest
Post by: _tom_ on March 15, 2006, 11:16:36 PM
So, since last night, around 6 o clock ish, I've had this weird achey pain that seems like its in the middle of my chest, between the stomach and chest area really. I dont know what the hell it is, but it kinda hurts, and I just want it to go away! Any ideas? I think it could just be a LOT of trapped wind as it seems to be relieved a bit when I belch but it just comes back again

Cheers for any help.

Heart burn, most likely. Get well.

Yeah I agree. Peppermint is good for dealing with it according to Mrs 38th ( she owns a Health Food Store).

If it gets worse when you exert yourself get it checked.

hmm does heart burn last for this long though? Thats why I thought it wasnt, I thought it only lasts a short period of time.. I'll get some peppermints tomorrow then I guess, see if they work!

When you say if it gets worse when you exert yourself, if you mean, if it hurts more if I yawn or breathe in deeply then yes it does hurt more. I think you're on about excercising though.. I'll go out on my bike tomorrow and see!

Also, its not really a burning, more of an acheing.. I dunno, I'm probably worrying over nothing

If you don't want to go to hospital/doctor straight away, phone NHS Direct (0845 4647). It's 24 hours and they'll give you some proper medical advice.

Get well. :)

I once pulled a muscle in my chest and it felt like I had stabs of pain - not pleasant. Ring NHS direct if I were you.

Broken tummy?! What is this magic. Anyway I think it might just be trapped wind of some form because I'm burping loads and I dont normally haha.. If it doesnt go away within a few days then mum says I'm gonna have to go to the doctors.

I used to get that for some reason. The best way i found to get rid of it is to stretch your arms back and push out and breathe in deeply. If it still hurts though then i'd rest for a bit or go get checked. I doubt it will be anything serious though

Ok will do that, probably look a tit but if it works then it doesnt matter  :P Right now I'm just sitting here chewing Rennie Deflatine to see if that will do anything, its strangely tasty. I doubt I've pulled a muscle, I havent done anything to acheive a pulled muscle

more than likely.

rennies are pretty good for that. Anything that's alkaline will stop it, since it's acid rising up in your stomach, i think.

Note: by saying alkaline, i do not mean drink industrial strength sodium hydroxide drain cleaner.

EDIT: though if it's lasted a few days, it might not be heartburn.

yep, sounds like trapped wind.

grip water (for babies!) sometimes can cure trapped wind, if you want to try to get your hands on some of that.  tastes pretty nice too, lol (like sugary water).

that'll probably make it worse, since it has loads of carbon dioxide in it... unless the extra gas shifts the old gas, or something...

Tom, the oracle that is Mrs 38th asked if you'd been eating acidic food and gulping it down. She suggests that, providing you are confident that it is not anything too serious and that you are not on any prescribed medication, you could try something called Centaurium which is a herbal remedy - treats gastric reflux, heartburn and hiatus hernia etc. Lay off alcohol too. Available from good Health Food stores. She knows her onions does Mrs 38th and she has great rapport with Doctors in our area.

haha shut up  :P I agree with sambo, Mrs 38th sounds nice and helpful, I'll see if I can find any of that stuff but I honestly think cokes kinda cured it   Thanks for all the help though, at least now I know its not too serious, just lots of trapped wind hahaha

I shall pass on your comments to Mrs 38th guys. She will be horrified about your coke cure though  Tom. She is pretty cool and lets me spend time in guitar shops and is a bad influence and says "go on.. treat yourself" and that has been known to happen. Seriously though Tom, I hope you do feel better and like some others have said, if it goes on too long, check it out with your Doctor.

but if that new cure doesn't work, i'd check out a doctor.

Could be a minor pneumothorax, in which case if it gets worse, seek medical attention right away, most often they heal naturally, but put you out of commission slightly for a few weeks.

sometimes you just gotta go to the doctors - I worried myself sick for weeks on end when I thought I had a lump in the family jewels. turned out to be nothing (grissle they told me), I felt like a right prat

Haha well thats a pretty serious matter HTH I wouldnt feel embarrased. Apparently its just bad indigestion, acid trapped in the chest or something. So  Mrs 38th was right. They gave me some medecine so hopefully I'll be allright soon.
Title: Weird pain in my chest
Post by: 38thBeatle on March 18, 2006, 05:47:42 PM
Well we both hope you feel better soon Tom. It is best to check with a Doctor if you get pains where you shouldn't. And HTH's experience also shows that you should never let embarrassment get in the way of a diagnosis. My son had a similar problem when he was 14 ( a very sensitive age) and he showed courage by coming to me with it and together we had it checked out and , as in most cases, it was a cyst and nothing to worry about. A friend/colleague at work has just undergone surgery for bowel cancer- hopefully he will be ok but it is touch & go. I am a believer in complementary therepy however it means just that, complemtary  to conventional medicine. Sorry chaps, I seem to have rambled.

For a slight return to the medical side of things.

Chest infections can start off in a similar fashion, as can pneumonia (spent 40+ hours lying in a corridor (on a trolly) with pneumonia).

Anything in the chest area beyond the usual should be checked out very quickly, as I went from a mild chest infection to hospital ase in about 36 hours.
