Sudden heart attack, dead at the age of 66.

Yes, I saw that earlier. RIP.
I must admit he doesn't mean very much to me, except that Friday Night in San Francisco was one of those "must-have guitar albums", way, way back when I first got into guitar. And to be honest, despite its must-have status, I never actually bought it.

Shame. He was a legend. FNiSF is worth a listen, Philly!

A master has faded away. It didn't really fancy the concerts he did with John McLauglin and Larry Coryell (Meeting of the spirits). The technical highbrow didn't touch me. His solowork was more inspiring for me.

Agreed! You can really here the virtuosity and joy in his (plus Al Di Meola's & John McLaughlin's) playing on this record. Amazing bit o'history right there!
I;ve never really heard anything else by him but what a loss.
