Title: Gibson Explorer Nailbombs/warpigs?
Post by: Garfish on July 05, 2014, 11:17:23 AM
Hello there,

I have a 2009 gibson explorer, which I have been considering to upgrade with some other pickups, since I'm not a fan of the 496R and 500T combo in that guitar. I have been looking at a set of Nailbombs or a set of Warpigs. Though the guitar is not as dark sounding like my 79' LP custom, I still don't want it to be too dark/muddy.

I mostly play stoner and doom with a hint of old school heavy metal. My setup is a Laney GH100TI and an Orange TH100 (depending on the mood) through an Orange 4x12" V30 loaded cab. Both my LP and my explorer is tuned to C# and I play 11-59's

I'm sorry if this specific topic has been touched before, but I believe that every context is different regarding this sort of threads.

I would like to hear about your experiences and ideas regarding these pickups

Hi

From your description I would recommend the Warpig. It will give you a massive bottom end which works really well for the doom style and also has plenty of drive and power to handle old school heavy metal .

I have the Epiphone korina Explorer, which I would consider to be a bit brighter than a mahogany version, and the Warpigs were too dark for my liking in it (tuned to C# standard).  It was okay, but it had a narrow range of sounds, really just stoner and Sabbath.  I changed them out for a Nailbomb set, which I like much better, but I play hardcore punk on it now.

Both sets had alnico bridge magnets.
