Title: Review: MXR carbon copy vs EHX memory toy
Post by: gwEm on July 20, 2014, 06:56:25 PM
I tested both these pedals back to back yesterday.

I thought they both sounded pretty good actually, however the carbon copy was better in almost every way, except price. The MXR was twice the price of the EHX.

MXR: stronger build, longer delay time, less noise, better clarity, more mojo/sparkle/musical, nicer sounding modulation, cooler paint job

It was obvious to me the MXR was a better pedal, however, maybe only 30% better and at twice the price.

The Memory Toy had a little bit more darker/muffled repeats, which some may prefer. At 70quid, no one is going the be disappointed with it.

I decided to go for the MXR. When I got it home, I compared it with my Juan Solo Grand Bleu delay. They are both just as good sounding to be honest. They have an obviously different character, but neither could be said to be better. Maybe the Grand Bleu has more charm to it. I'm putting together two boards at the moment and will use one on each.

Used with an AC adapter, the MXR does add a little hum to the signal, which surprised me since it's an analog unit.

Nice review, always nice to get head-to-heads of obvious competitors. :)

I have the Memory Boy, and I wonder if they're based on the same circuit as I'd definitely agree that the repeats are of a dark nature.  I kinda like that though - it's a sludgy sort of delay.  If I want bright and digital, I have my Digitech.

I love my cmat mods deeelay but when it came to buying a new delay pedal the carbon copy was the second choice I didnt go for it sounds really good though.  All depends on what youre after I guess.  The reason the CMAT one is so good to me is it literally delays the tone you already have with no added frequencies at all and zero noise etc
