Having been inspired by a Facebook discussion, if you could only play 1 guitar for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I think it would be a PRS DGT but every day there'd come a point where I'd wish I'd picked a Strat. The DGT is a great, great guitar that covers so much of the tonal spectrum that I find comfortable and it's a dream to play. But then again, what about the Strat...?

So probably:

I think I would have to make a custom for that cause I currently donīt own such a thing. It would probably end up being a 24 fret 7 string Fender Scale Les Paul with wraparound bridge, build in Super Hard On Booster (on miniswitch), Korina body with Walnut cap, Maple neck and Rosewood board, fitted with an Emerald set, piezo system, 2 vol, 2 tone, jimmy page wiring and a varitone, with the controlls aranged like on a Lucille.

Talk about a luthiers nightmare.^^

I think you can deduct from that that I currently have a good amount of very different guitars...

It would of course be a Gibson Les Paul Junior or Special, but I'm not sure which one.

Probably a singlecut Junior, to keep things as simple as possible.

ESP Eclipse I vintage black. Not necessarily with active EMGs but with some passive pups with coil split on neck position. Love that guitar, shame that it`s so expensive (for me anyway )

Les Paul. I don't need strat sounds and with the right pickups and pedals/amp they can be really versatile.

Really interesting question as it makes you think about what you really want in a guitar to be your absolute go to.

I enjoy how some here a purists with basic needs and some go a bit more fancy...and then there is me. xD
One guitar forever makes me want a bunch of options to get the max of different sounds out of a guitar, still a lot of people here go for rather classic and simple stuff (at least relativly). Food for thought.

For example I would like a 7 string. Do I use the seventh string often? No, I am not one of those modern metal 7 string guys, I come more from the Petrucci and Trivium (Shogun era) school of thought. An extension. However I use it more often than drop tunings and I can play my usual chords and all, but have more if needed. So that is in for me. Right now I have only one 7 string and a few 6 strings. When I can only have one, I would go for all the options though.

That was my thinking at least, but a lot of people have gone more for the comfort factor.

If I were to do that I would go for my 7 string Dean Vendetta (with EM neck and HD bridge) cause it was my first guitar and is all things considered my currently most versatile. Plays awesomely though, even though it was cheap (one of the lucky shots).

ESP Eclipse, because its handling & playability is just so great. You could simply swap the pickups if your taste changes and it wouldn't disappoint in so many settings.

It's a question that could be answered differently every day!  at the minute I have a Les Paul custom, a hardtail strat and a single pickup tele sitting in the house.  Every one of them, at some point, I've thought "this could be my number one for ever!"  In truth, if i was left with any one of them, i would manage just fine, although I'd certainly wish i had the others at some point.

So I reckon the answer is, whatever guitar you're left with.  No guitar is perfect, but that's one of the best things about them, working around their limitations.  Which is maybe why Philly's Junior might be the best of the lot :)

Superstrat of some description. If it's the only guitar I'm allowed I reckon I'd be speccing it up myself for fancy wiring options etc.

a very true point, if you are allowed non off-the-peg guitars and mods then i could have that gibson flying V with a parallel wound neck pickup and the serially would bridge pickup of my choice.

would be quite easy actually. i'd miss the strat feel sometimes though, also steinbergers are great for portability. but if it would be one guitar i guess i could be happy with a suitably modded V.

I think that whatever you settled on you will always hanker after another.

My PRS NF3 is about the most versatile guitar I've ever played, but these days I'm playing my 20 year old Ģ400 Charvel more than anything, because it has some serious mojo.  I'm sure I'll come back to the NF3 at some point.

Any my tele - my main gigging guitar for almost 3 years - is sitting gathering dust, and I can't remember the last time I played it!

So today it's Charvel.  Tomorrow, probably the Ģ5 nylon string jobbie sitting in my eldest son's room.

It probably would be a strat with different pickguards so I could use different pickups with it.

Yeah. In a real world situation modding the cr@p out of the thing (or just getting something custom-made) is absolutely possible, so I figure that's fair enough. Though for some people that might be skating a bit close to cheating (and I suppose you could also make the "real world" claim that you don't need to limit yourself to one guitar).

Stephan's suggestion of swappable scratchplates is a great idea, assuming that doesn't qualify as cheating

OK, if that's the game we're playing, my dream guitar would be one of these:

with a selection of swappable in bodies/necks/electronics/hardware.

I kid.

As to the amp question, I think I'd be hard pressed to choose anything other than a Cornell Romany, but maybe I'd get the 20 watt version if it were for keeps. Then again some of that Dumble crystal lettuce is always tempting just because.

For me, it'd have to be a bog-standard early-60's-style strat.

I play around with all this other stuff and they're very nice and all (it would take a lot to part with my 335). But when it comes down to it, in my experience (how I play, etc) a strat can do a passable job of impersonating everything else to a greater or lesser degree... but I've always found that when you ain't got no strat, you really can't get that strat vibe going, you really miss it,  and it's really depressing...

(Btw -I played a Variax for a couple of years, with the express idea of only having one guitar... I had no issues with the physical aspect of the thing - I actually loved the feel of it, but I could not get the strat model tweaked close enough to "strat" to satisfy my cravings. So my wife bought me a strat, I bought ITs, joined this forum, and ended up with LOADS of guitars!)

If I'd started out differently many years ago, and didn't bond with "strat" early on (looks, sound, how it feels, etc) - then I'd probably be a PRS dude, like the one posted by Andrew W up the top...

But because of my inbuilt "strat-man" thing (and I haven't played one for over 6 months - it's all Gibbos and teles at the moment), I'd be a fool not to choose a strat.

I dunno about amps... there are a few amps I suspect I'd really like (CAE OD100, Soldano SLO, Splawn Quick Rod) which I've never tried which I suspect I'd really like, and I wouldn't want to narrow myself down to one before trying them...

I've been umming and ahhing about a potential second guitar for some time now. Hopefully next year I'll be able to consider getting one - not a really short list at the moment but an SG is definitely on it;

SG
Les Paul Junior
Les Paul (or, if I had the money a Lion)
Strat
Tele (yes, another tele)
PRS Mira

From that list you might have guessed that I'm pretty much a traditionalist.

PRS Mira

I'm intrigued by the new S2 Mira Semi-Hollow.  I'd never heard of them until I saw one on eBay, PRS seem to have sneaked out the second generation of S2 models with no fanfare at all.

When you are talking about 'the rest of my life' the SG is a great choice as they won't hurt your aging back!  SG Junior is the best in that regard but the Standard is more versatile.

Despite enduring nearly half an hour of Rob Chappers, thanks for that!

Hmmm, now I want an S2 Mira Semi-Hollow.  In Antique White.  Maybe with birds.... although I'm not sure I like the S2 birds.

I have noticed that even though the S2 range has been around a while now, there never seem to be many of them actually in shops.  I don't know if that's because they don't sell, or because they do sell and the suppliers can't keep up with demand.  Time will tell.

Now... let me see... when did Andrew last buy a guitar? hehe... Something over three years ago, I think. And I've had no serious desire to buy another since then... I occasionally wonder about another set of BKP humbuckers (but that would probably mean retiring my MQs, so I keep dismissing the idea)

I will admit I'm considering a new bass at the moment, but I'm holding off actually going out to look at them... so far...

But for the purposes of this thread... I reckon basses don't count!

I have to admit, I can only do it as a theoretical exercise... In other words, I know what I'd have to choose if forced into this "completely unrealistic" scenario!

In practice, having owned several now and figured out how I want to use them for different applications, I'd feel more than a little deprived with just one guitar...

I don't have any different applications, I don't gig, I don't record... it doesn't really matter what the guitar even sounds like.

So in a sense it would be extremely easy for me to only have one guitar.  The difficult bit would be having to part with all the others I've got already!

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have actually tried a guitar in a shop and logic has prevailed.

Although I guess in some cases the logical thing to do was to buy the guitar rather than leave it, so I guess I'm being a bit hard on myself.

OK - if pickguard swapping is not allowed - it will be either a HSS strat or a tele.

Amps - probably a Vox Top Boost preamp coupled to a dual 6L6/EL34 or 6V6 cathode biased power amp. Enough clean headroom to play almost everywhere, and the overdrive tones can be had with pedals. Or is that cheating as well?

Cheers Stephan

That's not cheating, that what works in a lot of situations. HSS-strat, Redplate Blackverb Duo and some pedals would do it for me most of the time.

It's a hard one for me as I really like different guitars and tones. I would probably have to settle on a hss/hsh (although I don't fancy the look) or hh stratty kind of thing with a mahogany body and neck so it'll sit somewhere between a strat and a lp (a PRS might do the trick, but I haven't really played any PRSes so I can't really tell). I might be tempted to go for something with p90 though.

If you can't take an amp as well it would have to be acoustic. I hate acoustics so it would have to be a Kramer Ferrington; an acoustic thats pretending its really an electric...

For me. it would depend if I was gigging or not.  If not, and it's purely for home use, I'd be more than happy to play my #1 guitar every day:

If I needed something to also gig with, I wouldn't be happy with the Collection V - too much trauma being worried about it all the time!  In that case, I'd be quite happy with 'old faithful':

alder hardtail warmoth body on a fender tom delonge strat neck. love the big 70s headstocks. its so smooth and warm and the juggernaut matches it so well giving just enough clarity and bite. it is my go-to guitar on most occasions even though i have like 8 others.

I've just checked and it's an '06 ME1 that I bought in early '09 - so I've had it 5 and a half years.  It's still regularly played and with the 59/09s I fitted not too long ago it sounds better than ever  :D

Aside from the Squier that must be your longest serving guitar.  Either that or the Tele?

I've had my '83 Squier Strat since 1990, and as it was my first electric guitar I've had it longest.  After that it's the CS Tele which I've had 6 months longer than the ME1...

Easy one for me!

I've played my Kramer Pacer for over 20 years and the only original parts left are is the wood and the tuners.

Right now it sounds awsome, specs are WCR MurKat bridge, Slowhand Middle and Cold sweat Neck, Gotoh floyd with Titanium big block

I do not like the concept of this thread at all.  But, if I could only play one guitar it would have to be a custom shop Les Paul.  It would replace my LP Standard.  If I must have only one guitar, it had better be a great instrument with an iconic tone that can cover a lot of ground and sound good with all my rigs!

If I could only have four guitars, now we are talking ^_^

Actually the thread is about your favourite guitar in your collection.
