I've been checking out some Randall amps for the metal band I'm playing in and they really are the dogs bollocks, the Titan head has some pretty brutal distortion. I have a line on a Warhead for £325, I'll be posting some clips soon.
Anyone else using Randall or SS amps for metal? (by choice, not just because you can't afford a dual recto or other valve amp)
-
Dimebag seemed to like em a wee bitty :)
-
yeah, Dime is the obvious one - what I meant was is anyone HERE using them. I know that Anthrax and Down are both listed as endorsees allong with loads of other metal bands.
I've just got interested in tranny metal-type amps since the Line6 SpiderII head I used to have (and the AVT50 I tried) worked very well in a band context with the other guitarist using a JCM800.
Randall seem like the obvious choice as their SS amps are designed to be high-quality amps using SS technology BY CHOICE rather than valves.

i had a camo tolexed Warhead. Didnt like it at all.
Sold it on quick style!!
-
Just get an engl, if you can afford it.

tight Bass, good Mids and good highs. sometimes a bit too much highs. but, it can be tweaked .
-
Well, I've just sold a shiteload of gear on ebay so I have a fair wedge to play with, still... I'm keen on a Randall - the Titan clips on their website sound pretty damn tasty.
I've gone off the idea of a Warhead, the reviews on the web in general are fairly poor AND it's made in Korea
-
^have you tried a randall? (i know i haven't, lol)
-
don't think i have either actually - and for good reason - they always sound terrible to me in soundclips - i'll have a listen to this titan tho...
UPDATE: EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW - WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING? SOUNDS LIKE A PUSSY VERSION OF MY OLD MARSHALL MG (imho)
-
^^^^ crate prevails once again! lol...
dude dunno how many if any at all youve tried, but from my experience of their little combos they're awesome for the money..... really worth a look if you havent checked them out.... having said that i havent tried any of their higher end stuff.... but if they're good enough for WFD.... lol...

One thing is for sure, people either love or hate tranny amps and this is especially true with Randall. They do that extreme metal gain thing great and thats it - luckily for me that's what I want it to do.
You need to understand that in a twin guitar band context it makes alot of sense - it never sounds right when I have a valve amp cranking in this current band, tranny amps just merge perfectly with the other guitarist using a JCM800.
One thing is for sure, my one true talent is wringing a tone for any old piece of shite amp, so I'm sure it'll not be too hard with these Randall amps - if you listen to the clips through your pc speakers it WILL sound cr@p but play it through a full range system (hi-fi) and you get that full-bore bass grunt.
Alot of the metal bands I like are listed as endorsees so it makes sense to give 'em a go. I've already had good success with a Line6 SpiderII head - it needed to be cranked but there were some great tones in that thing.
-
the compression u get on a SS amp is great for soloing metal/thrash/shred style stuff. makes it a whole lot easier than playing through a valve amp, im guessin thats dimebags whole attitute towards it.
although listening to the guy i don't think he'd struggle on a valve amp and he started using them just before his death.
-
Its not just that, tranny amps give you that big, tight bass end for low-string chugging with ease.
I'm just bored with the same old sound everyone is using with Dual Rectos and I figure going in the opposite direction might work - I certainly like where it's got me so far.
-
just get an engl. now.
tight as $*£#.
and all-valve to boot.
oh, and it sounds nothing like a mesa.
EDIT: just to point out, that's my over-the-top way of saying to try one if you haven't already, i'm not telling you to go out and buy one on my recommendation, lol. but in my opinion, all the things you're praising solid state for can be got with an engl (assuming you get along with the amp's voicing, lol), and it's valev to boot, so you can get much more organic tones too!
-
Get an older Valvestate 8080 (i think...)
It was good enough for Chuck Schuldiner on his Death albums, and if you have heard his sound you will know what i mean!!! Valvestate amp, 1 pickup guitar = metal heaven and a GREAT lead tone :)
-
The older Valvestates 8080s are cool too but I think we've come a long way since then - I prefer the newer (AVT) Valvestates.
I know that alot of the things I'm praising SS for can be got with valves, its just that valve amps are...
(a) a pain in the ass to move around
(b) generally 2, 3, 4 times more expensive
(c) we have to rely on modern valves which are hit & miss on quality, tone, and reliability
I've tried the Engl Powerball and its a great amp - just tell me where I can buy one for £450 and I'll have one.

haha, touche, find one for that and i'll buy one too!
But yeah, I know what you mean.
I don't know what james meant about ss being easier to play on than valves, i much prefer valves, but maybe that's just me...
-
are krank/krankensteins or whatever (i think dimebag used an amp called something like that) valve or SS?
-
Krank amps are Valve.
They were not 100% ready for sale before Daryll was murdered I believe. He did use some on Damage Plan Album I think.
-
ahhh ok theyre a no no then...
-
The Krank amps are pretty expensive too. Dime was apparently happy with them and about to start using them on stage (endorsed), I'd certainly be interested in trying one just to see if they're all that.
As for valve versus solid state amps, I would pick valve every time if I was the only guitarist in the band. Or... if money were no option, I'd have a Diezel VH4 and Herbert :D
-
haha lol...
so you think that SS really do cut through better in a band then?
this is interesting news...

For what its worth I dont think SS cuts through as well as valve. When I saw this cover band (that I'm now in :P) playing live, one of the guitarists has a Valvestate and the other had a Fender valve amp of some description. You could hardly hear my mate on his valvestate. Its probably gonna be like that when we start gigging as well as I have a Fender valve amp, he still has the Valvestate

I never said that tranny amps cut through a band better - the usual problem with those amps is that people scoop the mids (instantly removing them from the mix) - beginners mistake!
I'd say that tranny amps don't cut quite as well as tranny amps, but that's a good thing in my band situation... the other guitarist is running a rig with SO much mids that my tone needs to sit back a little more in the mids but have a huge bass end. This is not a 'whats best' discussion, it's a 'what works best in this situation' discussion.

^ ahhhh okay dokay.
nice clips WFD, especially for recording into a pc.

just listened to those titan clips, not too keen on the distortion clips but im listening through pc speakers. the lead clip though, that was awesome... could definately hear some dimebag-esque tones coming through in there somwhere.
