ok very simple question...
can it be beaten for value for money for rock--->hard rock--->metal tones?
-
now you have opened up another "opinions" can of worms LOL
-
oh dear lol...
well it'll be interesting to hear what people have to say.... espiecally the 'opinions' part actually, i feel like i know peoples personalities on here a bit now.... so can kind of read what they're saying....
so come on....
is it THE rock-metal combo in its price range? or can it be beat...
-
marshall RULES!
NO!!!!!!!!!! Vox ALL the way DUDE!
Heck, GOTTA be a Peavey Model # 8564528406059473624365575860605
Good luck buddy :)

 oh dear what have i done.....
i think people are scared to reply now....
-
Screamer is probably a good bet too. But did'nt find the "deals" advertised on the Screamer :)
-
yer screamers are a little more expensive...

Yes.
-
..... not quite the answer i was hoping for but we're half way there....
what can beat it?
-
This is what I want if I get a job.. I think.. I dont even know. Because I want a JCM800 naturally, but they ARE common... and a one trick pony, but a GREAT trick..
Anyway:

They sound awesome.

awesome... just stretching a bit too far though maybe..... might be gone by the time i have the cash....
^searcher... pretty please? share your invaluble wisdom....
-
Have one in Southampton too, hope they still do when I arrive :)
-
what so your looking for a screamer or thunder?
what are the main differences? thats anotehr q-
what can beat a thunder if anything and what are the differences between the screamer and thunder????
-
i haven't tried the thunder, but i know MDV took a screamer over the thunder based on versatility.
I know the screamer has an extra channel etc., and twin master volumes (i.e. footswitchable volume boost) if you buy the 6-button footswitch.
But yeah, on bang for buck, engls are great.
I'd look into the laney tt50 combo too (£679 if you shop around), assuming it sounds the same as the tt100 head i tried, which was very nice, but the screamer has a slightly wider range of tones (it gets better fendery cleans, and heavier metal distortion). I'd probably take the laney over it for hard rock, though. (i haven't tried them head to head).
-
hmmmmm.... dunno whether to save up a little extra for the screamer..... is the screamer thunder + more or just different to thunder/more versatile?
bascially does it do the same stuff as the thunder and then some... or does it do more than the thunder but just differently?
-
from what i hear (i haven't tried the thunder), the thunder is more darkly voiced, has less gain, one less channel, and is generally less versatile.
-
i see.... see i dunno if i would mind that.... i tend to like slightly darker voiced things... and my p-90 would hopefully give it as much brightness as i would really need..... gonna have to try one.... with my axe or a similar one as well....
-
^searcher... pretty please? share your invaluble wisdom....
Sorry, Sam, I don't actually have any invaluable wisdom here. I've never played through an Engl. That didn't stop me from posting, though. :P
-
^^sambo- yeah, you need to try them both, head to head, with your guitar.
Just don't try an SE, because then you'll get extreme GAS, and it's about £2000 for the head... :(
-
oh i see 'searcher'.. you thought youd just take advantage of the slight chink i left in the armour of my post.... you sicken me.....
anyway, on a brighter note, i dont think i would dare try an se for fear of actually breaking down and crying in the process....
what would be the advantages of getting say an ac30? apparently the £600 ish ones arent actually the 'real thing' - theyre made in the far east unlike the £1000 ish ones which are british made or something????
but could i buy an ac30 and then say use a boost/overdrive pedal.... whats the comparison between the engl and vox...

They seem like two totally opposite things  I'd rather have the Vox probably, although I havent played either, it seems like the more vintagey of the two.
-
yer... ive tried an ac30.... nice cleans, didnt have a chance to really give the distortion a good test.... but in machinehead (although i dunno if i trust ANYTHING that comes from there) they apparently sold four of them and they all broke.... so they might stop selling them.... hmmmm probably just their giutar 'tech':
(who doesnt know how to fit a tapped p-90)
fiddling with them....
but the way i see it in my head is- nice cleans plus overdrive/distortion pedal (a distortion pedal that doesnt colour the amps sound that is) = great distortion tone.....
does that make sense to anyone? like surely if you have an amp with great cleans like a fender, then putting a decent, fairly non-sound colouring distortion/overdrive pedal in the mix, the distortion will be just as good as the cleans...?
so going by that EXTREMELY unproven theory lol... i could either get the engl, or the vox+pedal....
dunno what the hell im going on about.... save me.... somebody.. please?
-
well, yeah, the vox is vintage sounding. My savage se actually sounds a little like a vox on the crunch 1 channel, in triode mode, because triode mode has more natural compression etc., like a vox- but that's the only engl that really sounds like that.
the vox will be no-where near as versatile as the engl. At low volumes, you're struggling to get it much heavier than classic rock (haven't tried it with an OD though). It'll be better at the vox tone, but the engl will be better at everything else.
EDIT: the engl's distortion, assuming you like its voicing, will sound better than the Vox + OD pedal.
The engl's range of tones is amazing, quite frankly. By just switching my footswitch, i can go from a fendery bluesy yet jazzy, warm clean, to a vox-y/fendery/marshally (mixture, lol) kind of classic rock crunch, that sounds bluesy with single coils, to classic metal (maiden) and 80's hard rock and hair metal, to sweet, smooth shred solos in smooth mode, to brutal modern metalcore (think killswitch engage) in rough mode. EDIT: did you check out my dmusic site? I posted it in that other engl thread.
And the SE is just heaven. Every friggin tone under the sun is in there. Seriously. And they're all amazing.
Now, the screamer doesn't have just this range (doesn't really have the smooth shred tones- now you could probably dial this in, but you'd lose the killswitch engage tone, since you'd have to dial in a less trebly heavy lead channel), but it has fendery cleans (with added sparkle), marshall but brighter crunch, hard rock soft lead channel, and modern metal heavy lead channel.
I haven't tried an amp with a wider range of tones than an engl, and I've tried virtually every amp it has been possible for me to try.
-
yer i checked your site out.... at first .... was thinking ... hmmm good stuff..... then i realised that the settings were like master volume at 2 and i was like.... OH MY GOD..... :o
which engl were you talking about
the engl's distortion, assuming you like its voicing, will sound better than the Vox + OD pedal.
?
-

It's not all that loud with the master at 2, to be honest. I have the channel volumes very low as well, remember. You could turn it down lower, i mean at that volume the power amp isn't doing anything, i just like it at that level, lol.
I was pretty much talking about any of the engls. All amps have their signature sound, pretty much, you'll either like it or hate it (as with any amp). I mean, if you like the tone of the vox more than the engl, you might prefer it with an OD to the engl.
-
yer the fact that the power amp wasnt doing anything i what i meant.... good tone even at that low volume....
gonna try and find a laney to test-drive soon.... and if i like it, then it shouldnt actually be that long til i get it cause ive got an lc30 and crate to sell :D
-
Didn't you only get the lc30 recently? What's wrong with it? (I haven't tried one).
-
nothing really wrong with it, but ive got two amps which take up too much space. also, the crate is supposed to be for low volumes/home use and the laney for band use.... but we're always at such low volumes now because of complaining neighbours that it makes no difference between the laney and the crate really lol.... so i figured (with a little advice from nick) that the wisest thing to do would be sell them both to get just the one amp which could be used for when i start gigging.... and for really quiet- i.e silent use, i can use my zoom through headphones or stereo amp and speakers.......
so when i sell the two amps, im hoping to then sell my ipod and some crummy pedals (well actually one of them is really quite good- vox clyde mccoy wah) and have enough for an engl (cheap one) you can get the thunder combos for 500 in some places....
-
^sounds like a plan. Just remember, the engl footswitches are extra... :(

I have a Screamer Top. Think it's good value for money, but a matter of taste, there are MANY amps in that price range that do a great job. What I like about the screamer is that it sounds very good at minimal Volume. Funny thing is that the UniValve (which only has one valve class A) only sounds good when turned up at least half - so I end up playing the big amp at the low volumes and vice versa.
I think the screamer is basically the same as the thunder, just a few extras missing.
Go to the shop and try and compare, nothing beats trying...

ok the killer question now.... a tricky, specific one too, what would sound better for classic-hard rockmaybe dabbling in a lil bit 'o metal:
engl thunder 50 combo (WITHOUT attenuator)
OR
laney lc30 (WITH attenuator- hotplate probably).
and it pretty much has to be the thunder 50 COMBO no other, dearer engl's - thats my limit price wise.
anyone tried both?

I can beat that, I've tried neither.
is there any way you can crank your laney, even just once, to see what it sounds like? it'll not sound any better than that with an attenuator (probably slightly not as good).
Then just try a thunder, and see which is better.
-
i dunno when im gonna be able to crank my laney... oh wait... yes i do... tomorrow... AHAH!!! YES!!!! parents and sister going out for ages, oh my...
dunno if i can take it tho... i may die.... if im not hurriedly posting on here about how amazing it was then im dead ok?
get back to you guys tomorrow....
-
^use earplugs!
I had my 100 watt engl up full today, and with earplugs it's just like watching tv.
-
shite.... but then surely you cant hear the amp properly??!?!?!!!!!
-
shitee.... but then surely you cant hear the amp properly??!?!?!!!!!
(a) the alternative is not being able to hear anything properly
(b)get attenuating ones- like the etymotic ones on www.stringbusters.co.uk . You can hear a normal conversation, or a cranked halfstack, lol.
it's true, it cuts out the treble a little (what's doing the hearing damage lol), but it gives you a pretty good indication of the tone.
-
lol ok.. now i need to find some earplugs.... hmmmmmmm..... would covering my ears with my hands in terror work as well?
-
^ if you have four hands, since you'll be playing guitar at the time...
-
DAMN! didnt think of that one..... what if... WHAT IF..... i played the guitar 'remotely'??
ok being serious now.... is there anything that would work apart from ear plugs lol cause i may not be able to find any by tomorrow...
-

SAMBO YOU LOSER
Could this be less rock and roll than my bad indigestion? I hope so. I've never objected to cranking my amp though
-
tom, its not even comparable..... complaining about a wickle tummy ache... awwwwwwwww
-
says you complaining about an earache that hasn't even happenned yet and probably won't :P
-
BAH! .... at least i describe mine with a bit more panache...

I reckon you should buy my Marshall/Behringer halfstack for £300 notes and then spend the rest on an attenuator.
Just my 2 pennies
Andy!

if you're really stuck, and have a long enough lead, you can go outside the room and close the door over- that'll cut out a bit of the noise.
You won't die, but you might mess up your hearing...
-
says you complaining about an earache that hasn't even happenned yet and probably won't :P
i dunno, there's no point in risking your hearing un-necessarily...
-
haha andy lol...
ok just tried it on full volume + almost full gain and it was pretty damn good.... not AS loud as i expected, i think its cause we turned it up very gradually....
i was too close to it really- less than 3 metres away, so there was a LOT of hum and squealing.... need a longer lead,
now just gotta try an engl.... and maybe andys marshall/behringer
-

YAY he actually tried it. What was it like then?
Also, my webers gone up to £36 on ebay, grab it whilst its hot
-
haha! damn im fed up of people trying to sell me stuff!!!!?!?!!! lol
it was awesome but was WAYYY too noisy (not loud NOISY) cause like i said i was really close, and ive got a p-90 so the hum was immense.
wish i had a longer lead.... definately better than my crate at higher volumes though....
so now just need to decide whether to go for laney+hotplate, or new amp altogether....
also, my bloody mates washburn, how unfair can life be, hes only just started, and every time i play his washburn I WANT TO KILL HIM!!!!!
its a USA made (no serial number so maybe US custome shop!!!), chicago series, KC something.... absolutely... AWESOME!!!!
ive roped him into getting nailbombs  so there shall be clips and pics of the beast soon.
