Title: Gibson Les Paul Studio - Upgrade
Post by: L'Opeel on August 22, 2014, 01:42:58 PM
Hi Guys First post here it goes.

I am thinking of upgrading the pickups on my Gibson Les Paul Studio.

I currently play through an Orange TH30, My main band is a 3 piece Grunge/Rock Band but I'd like a versatile yet powerful and clear guitar.

I am thinking of Nailbomb Bridge and Stockholm P90 Neck. As I'd like to try a P90 style pickup.

What do you guys suggest?

I think the alnico nailbomb would be great for some thing like AIC or Soundgarden.  Right from classic rock to thrash its spot on IMO

I've got a similar setup. Les paul custom lite through a th30. Got a nailbomb in the bridge which works nicely for what I do, nice and aggressive, fairly trebly but in a good cutting way, not icepicky or anything. Sounds great with the shape control at around 11 o-clock or so. Also sounds pretty good clean. Would recommend the nailbomb.

A-Bomb sounds great in a LP!  It gets more classic sounding as you turn the volume pot down but it's a gritty, ill tempered, pissed off sort of a thing.  You'll have the nice wide pick attack and the nice clarity / string separation which is awesome.

I can't comment on the stockholm but I'm sure it's awesome.  I have a Rebel Yell neck PUP which I like.  It hands cleans, lower gain rhythm, and lead playing well.

Any love for the Stockholm Neck Pick up?

What would you pair with a Nailbomb bridge.......

I am looking to have a versatile yet powerful/clear guitar being the only guitarist in a rock/grunge trio.

Ben from BKP said to me once that either the Stockholm or Nailbomb neck would pair equally well with my A-Bomb bridge

I haven't played the Stockholm neck, but it seems fairly hot.  If you are worried about that you could ask BKP about making a version of the Supermassive neck in the HSP housing.  They actually did the reverse with my Stockholm bridge - it's a regular P-90 housing

Any love for the Supermassive P90?

Or  other suggestions for a Les Paul Studio given my setup and genre.

Well, drop tune metal axe is a LP type (though more in the ESP style) and I got a Stockholm in the bridge and a Supermassive in the neck. The reason I did not go for the pair was that while I really wanted the power, fatness, and agression in the bridge, which the Stockholm delivers in an amazing raw style (brilliant modern rock and metal PU), in the neck I wanted to take a step back. When a talked to BKP they described the neck differences as the Stockholm being more heavy on the bass and hotter than the Supermassive. Since I do not like super fat necks I went SM.

Really great neck PU. Distinctly modern with proper modern cleans, that amazing P90 definition, and warmth. Still a rather fat PU on the low strings for my personal taste, but still quite allright since it is so defined and clear in true P90 fashion. This does not get mushy easily if at all. I have played riffs and stuff on it by accident more often and longer than I care to admit. For leads it is brilliant. The P90 attack makes it amazing for fast playing. Seperated yet fluid.

I have a Stockholm bridge in one of my guitars and a Nailbomb set in another.  I would say that the two bridge pickups are about on a par output wise, so Kiichi's advice re the Stockholm/Supermassive combo should hold for the Nailbomb/Supermassive combo

I totally get wanting to take a 'step back' with the neck pickup.  That's how all my guitars are configured.
