Title: Abomb and Painkiller review (both bridge)
Post by: Tom2k on August 28, 2014, 01:06:11 PM
I play mostly thrash metal so i read about the BKPs.

Abomb

Ended up getting this and really liking the sound of it. Initially the sound was thin and bright but after adjusting the string height(raising them) the sound changed dramatically. I have put this in a Jackson Kevin Bonds signature and in contrast of what many others report i don't find this pickup particularly dark, actually it's quite bright in my guitar. It's much brighter than the sh-4 in my Jackson RR1t. But i like it anyways, it has a nice bite and leads are a dream. It work really well with downtunings as well.

The downsides:

I run this through a kemper profiler and I have tried this trough many, many profiles. The cleans are ok but I find the pickup too hot for the best cleans and really anything other than metal. This may also be an issue with the kemper settings but i don't have this problem with the sh-4.

Also it's very sensitive like an active pickup, you have to be very careful to muting when playing which can be a pain in the ass but that is probably my just a sign that i really suck at guitar. I don't experience this with my SH-4 though....

8.5/10

Painkiller
Tried this briefly as i ordered these to my new RR1t, i ended up liking the sh-4 so much that i decided to keep them in there so i swapped the PK for the abomb in my RR Kevind bonds.
I really liked the tone, it was tight and responsive and had a nice growl to it. I felt it was not as full as the nailbomb as it has less mids, but had a little more bottom and top end. I actually liked the clean tones from this pickup more than my nailbomb.

Downside:
It sounded great while played with powerchords but as soon as you play one single string it sounded gnarly and "spanky"?

It was maybe too tight for my guitar and i ended up missing the bass-response from my nailbomb. I switched them out 30 minutes later and i am now selling my PK-set.

7/10

I think maybe both of these pickups benefit from a guitar with a little more wood, like a Les Paul. I am however pleased how my nailbomb sounds in my RR kevin bond and don't think i will swap it anytime soon.
