Title: Humbucker for Gordon Smith GS1

Very soon Im gonna be purchasing a Gordon Smith GS1 (minus a pick up) and I just want some advice regarding which bareknuckle 'bucker to get.  I want to keep the sound as versatile and as sweet sounding as possible.  Just want to find out what pickups sound as good tapped as they do untapped.

if your looking for versatility im guessing the mules... never tried 'em but they have a bit of a rep for being all-rounders- but not in a bad way.

my VHIIs are nice tapped and untapped. A good all rounder  :)

Mules are really versatile in my opinion, although some people may find them "underpowered" for heavier music, I've never had a problem with using them for metal.. you just have to work harder!

Just put crawlers on my sg....got vintage to modern..very versatile

Depends what sounds you're after.  I have a coiltapped Warpig in a GS1 - now THAT is versatile!

I have a Black Dog in the bridge of my Gordon Smith guitar and love it.

1 thing to watch out for, when they route the guitar they route the pickup cavity to fit the pickup they fit at the factory. If you fit any other pickups after this, it may need a little extra routing, depending on the pickup you fit to it.

When i ordered my Gordon Smith, I sent him 2 Duncan pickups to put in it. But when I came to change them for Bareknuckles, I found that they wouldn't fit, due to the shape of the pickup legs. The pickup cavity was also too shallow to accept the Bareknuckles, so I had to route the guitar slightly to make them fit.

Just something to look out for :)

If you're getting a GS1 made BKP can send the pickup straight to the Gordon SMith workshop - it's been done before!

I'd think about getting a series parallel switch instead of a coil tap, less volume drop still humcancelling and a better tone than a coil split.

I'd vote for the Riff Raff in the GS1 if it's solid mahogany, possibly a Mule. Riff Raffs with the Alnico V and slightly lighter wind sound great in mahogany bodies. The Mules still work very well too, slightly softer with alnico IV and more turns of wire.


Should sound great either way!

Or............VHII, touch more power again but still has the bite of the RR's Alnico V but with a little more bottom end.
How about using an on/on/on switch for series/parallel/split best of all worlds!
