Title: NGD Fireman!
Post by: m t soule on September 23, 2014, 03:02:04 PM
Say hi to my new Ibanez Frm250mf.
Its been on my list (along with a vintage iceman and a Mustain angel of death) for ages now  regardless of the price and they finally became more widely available here in uk.
I expected it to be big, heavy with a massively thick neck, too thick for me. But i was wrong.....its ace!
I'm a bit of a Japanese ibanez snob and this is made in china and that was another reason i expected to not like this.

It plays fantastic and the d!m#£$!0 air classics sound very cool. I think they may compare to a mule maybe (just an uneducated guess) not as fat as my vhii neck and the bridge is voiced like a holy diver but quieter and slightly less throat. The quality of sound is there though. are there better BKP options?
A couple of strange things for me are the wiring "options". Firstly It's wired so you can't choose to use the middle single coil on its own instead the middle selection gets you both humbuckers. This does sound ace but i would love to hear the area67 on its own. Second is the tone knob only works in positions 3. 4 and 5 (Ibanez did intend this it's not a fault) . Maybe this is to do with the middle position setup....who knows

I must have sat in the shop for an hour just playing! I forgot i was there!! Ibanez did well for a Made in china instrument.

If you want more info just ask

Cool stuff! Fireman is also on my list...god it is a long list. So congrats on getting one that is lovely. That wiring does sound strange though...

pretty pretty!

I guess they wired the tone pot like that to brighten up the neck postions

Interesting.
To actually brighten them or To keep them bright, do you think?
The latter seems weird admittedly.

as a reference for other forumers heres that position selector diagram.

would be cool to try some different wiring options!

removing the tone pot makes things a little brighter than it being there, even on full. i know paul likes a bright sound, with the humbuckers, maybe it was a little dark for him.

Yeah man had a great nosey of that yesterday.
So the option to rack it up to the pot is there maybe? I do use my tone to warm things up here and there.  Plus as awesome as this guitar sounds the difference between 1, 3, 5 positions are more subtle than my other guitars

the tone control will be connected to the bridge humbucker. you can just move it to the jack. a pretty easy mod.

I have been sat playing it for 3 hours straight now and i must say its great in the neck position! very stratty indeeeeeed and bright for a neck position!
not too impressed with the split with the area 67 tho bridge or neck. It muddies and weakens considerably to my ears. I kind of get the same experience with my Irish Tour as well tho. An Ibanez s1 middle is much better suited to my tastes so far. The s1 is fuller and louder wether split or not

Cheers guys.

Another up date after another day of playing. I love It more now that I have found the amps optimal settings for the dimarzio bits in it. Sweet is the only word i can find to accurately describe all the tone out of this thing. It's very nice indeed (including the area 67)

Early sunday morning I was inspired to do a quick demo for you. nothng special just some improvisational razamataz to indulge myself in whilst lounging around in my tartan pyjamas.

I got the backing track from the october jemsite challenge thread.

It's recorded using two mobile phones. one to play the backing (an old iphone) and the other to record with.

I am MUCH happier with the sound now that i went up a string guage
