Hi Guys! This is a track I recently recorded with my band, with all instruments with exception of drums being recorded via the Ultra. The guitar was an Ibanez RGD420z with the Black Hawk in the bridge.
I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.
Have a listen, if you like the track, like our Facebook page as its a great help!
You can find the song on Youtube, http://youtu.be/xE5Xb9tXGi4

i listen to a lot of pop punk and frankly i dont think that tone fits the song very well. its not a bad tone by any means, but it feels more metal to me

Thanks for checking out the clip man!
I totally agree with you! Tone wise its definitely more metal then a typical Pop-punk sound.
My band and I have been having this discussion since we started. And we still can't place ourselves in a specific genre.
What would your opinion be as to the actual genre? I don't think I would call this song 'Metal' and for every genre we go to we find ourselves saying the same thing as you have.
If the track was recorded with a traditional pop-punk sound would it then be pop punk? But can the genre be completely dictated by tone?
An interesting concept that I would love to see others opinion on.
What do you, or anyone else think?
Can genre be dictated by tone? And what would you label this tracks genre as?

I agree on that 'pop punk' tune. I'd wait for littleredguitars2 to say something, as that's his bag, but for pop punk I think you'd be better off with something like a Riff Raff and a less gainy amp. As far genre goes, are those palm mutes I hear? Not really pop punk. I would think it is somewhere between pop punk and metalcore.

Hey Agent Orange!
Yeah I'd be interested in what littleredguitars2 has to say. I'm fascinated by discussions like this.
If only I could have my pick at everything in the BKP range and test them all for varying genres! But certainly, I think the Riff Raff would be a great choice for something like traditional pop punk!
If you had to label a single genre on that song to describe it to someone, what would you call it? I can't seem to label it as anything other than a hybrid.
I'm just curious to see what others perceive the song as.

Oh he did say something above, but nothing about alternative setups/pickups for pop punk.
For pop punk i guess you can go for a variety of set ups. I mean, those De Longe Strats have Duncan Invaders in them, which are pretty beefy. But I guess the main characteristics they have are fairly bright guitars and amps, and no palm muted metal riffing, much more major chords type of thing. I would think that your average one pickup guitar would do the trick, with something fairly loud and bright in the bridge slot. Something like my SG Junior would probably be perfect for it, but the amp I have is probably not the best. If I wanted to though I could probably squeeze a good pop punk sound out of it via my Classic 30.
