Title: Ultimate amp?
Post by: mia on March 20, 2006, 06:45:28 PM
Im looking for an amp head. All about distortion (as i have an amp for my clean sounds). Id like a kind of hard rock sounding distortion. Something like a Muse typoe sound. Enough gain for meta would be nice too.  Probably a valve amp with relatively low wattage i suppose, as i mostly play in my room and garage.

Ive got a budget of around up tp £500, but im willing 2 go over that for something ectra special :P

I also need a cab...

Its more than £500, but the Splawn Quick Rod sounds amazing. For a bit lower price I guess a JCM800 will do the same kinda thing, just less versatility.

if you like the muse sound then buy what matt bellamy uses:

Marshall DSL100
Soldano amps
Matchless amps

he does use Diezel but i dnt think you will find one of them for £500  :)

you won't get a soldano or matchless for £500 either, i'd have thought. So yeah, some kind of marshall.

im after quite a modern tone...reviews about the splawn seem 2 suggest that its got quite a vintage sound...something like the brown sound....is this right?

I think the Laney GH-50L is spose 2 be a good amp head. Its only about £400 aswell. Im was actualy thinking of getting it with an Engl standard 4X12 cab. Due to the Engl, which have quite a metal style sound, you should be able 2 get a nice modern sounding tone....Or am i wrong???

errrrrr- hello people?!?! for what this mia wants; the obvious amp for him/her is either a ENGL thunder or screamer - stop letting your own taste get in the way of others :P
Very modern sounding amps. I'd go with the screamer if i were you - very versatile, lots of different sounds - sparkling cleans to brutal hi gain. will do muse almost perfectly i'd say - just you ask Tim who has a screamer combo. Matt Belamy is also using BKPs - what a great guy (apart from his music)

ummm ye. I tried it out in a music shop. Its got a nice modern sound actualy. Seems to be quite orientated towards heavy music. I think its real expensive though...unless that shop was just trying 2 rip every1 off 8)

^the screamer comes as a combo, i think that's the one we were suggesting.

If you do decide to go for a screamer, ask to see what speaker is inside it, the new ones have celestion vintage 30's, the older ones didn't (i think).

Just get a Marshall.
With 500 pounds,it'll be hard to get a good old 800.
900 can be good but try it before purchase.
2000 is fine.
Bellamy used to have a few DSL on tour but the most DSL JCM 2000 he played was a DSL Orange Crunch Special Edition.

For the new album,he uses a Marshall Super Lead  and a Vox Ac 30.

I'm sorry, i missed that, you see, i thought you made a derogatory, sarcastic comment about one of the best contempory bands today. Albeit he's no Jimmy Page or Rory Gallagher, but he's still can get some amazing sounds out of an axe.

Well, thas my rant for today.  :)

Lol - sorry, I don't like his guitar style, and i don't like his horrible, boring, droney vocals. I respect ur opinions though.

lol, this could go on for a while, and yeh, i get what you're on about with his vocals, a lot of songs sound the same too, but i have a tendency to like bands like that, hence my fondness of Coldplay.

I gotta stay away from some of the other guitar sites.  They're making me nasty.

also the ENGL Thunder 50 combo would be a great amp.

any of the ENGL combos really would be an absolute god send for that type of music great amps really modern tones big huge sound all valve decent construction, nobody else is providing that quality of tone at that price these days, the ENGL's play with the big boys and their price is good.

If youve got a clean amp why not just get a nice driver pedal, I have the DS-1 modded by robert keely and its really good.

+1

EDIT: i was impressed with some of the laneys too, for the price- both the VH (more metal) and TT (more hardrock and shred). they're slightly less than the screamer.

but yeah, engl are definitely up there when it comes to value...

The Marshall DSL100 will be perfect for muse but they lack that chug for heavy metal. My B-52 AT212 was $800 and I can get a pretty good muse sound and a really good metal sound. They have head versions too, the AT-100.

If you're after an amp for playing in the house/bedroom then 50 watters are way too loud- unless you attenuate them or keep the volume down. Either way you're not gonna get 'that' tone.

You'd be better of with a low wattage valve amp and a Zvex fuzz factory f0r the real Muse stuff- the same pedal Matt uses.
