Title: What's the middiest neck humbucker?
Post by: Niilz on October 18, 2014, 04:30:03 PM
Hey folks,

stupid question: What's the middiest BKP (or non BKP) neck humbucker?

I need a matching neck pickup for my 7-string Blackdog in my PRS 7string (25" scale - the usual PRS Custom 24 specs but with 7-strings...)
Tuning: A E A D G b e - strings: D'Addario EXP148 plus 0.80 low A string.

The Blackdog bridge is  the absolutely best bridge pickup for that guitar, but the neck Blackdog is not tight, "fast" and mid-strong enough for my needs.
It would be nice to have a quiet modern sounding, razor sharp, compressed pickup in contrast to the BD bridge.
I'd rather play leads with the neck than use it for cleans...

Opinions???

(Thanks in advance for your help!!!)

That sounds like my Nail Bomb neck to me. I tried the Alnico Nail Bomb set in all my guitars and in the end it settled in my mahogany bodied Tele HH, the neck Nail Bomb in their has suddenly become my favourite neck pickup - overdriven it's got lots of bite (ie. razor sharp) and also a really great tone that pretty much matches your description exactly. One word of warning though, it did take me 3 guitars until I found the ideal home for it, the least impressive combination was with an ESP Eclipse (Les Paul style, solid mahogany body / maple top - very neutral sounding) and the most was with the Tele HH were it currently resides. In my experience, to get the best out of this pickup you need some warmth in the guitar to balance the Nail Bomb's aggression.

I'd agree.  Out of the BKP neck pickups I've heard the NB is the one.

I have had a matched A-bomb set in the PRS - the Nailbombs did not work as good as the calibrated Blackdogs do.
The neck Nailbomb was a little too dark overall and it compressed the upper midrange a lot more than the Blackdog neck.

So the A-bombs went out and the - imho "better" Blackdogs - went in a few weeks ago...

Nailbomb neck or Juggernaut neck. They are both fantastic in mahogany.

PAINKILLER!

Well, the PK does do all that stuff you mentioned... I have no idea how it would fit with a Black Dog, though! Might be a little... unbalanced!

 Painkiller would have been my first choice, but I did not want to bias someone.

Did anybody here compare PK neck to BD neck or to NB neck?  I do not fear them to be to "unbalanced", since I want a "push" in the neck position if you toggle
between bridge an neck. I just do not want the neck humbucker to be to dark (and that was the case with the Nailbomb neck and those really thick gauge strings) in comparison...
