Title: Which Push/Pull Pots for Coil Tapping Gibson SG?
Post by: slashisgod on November 12, 2014, 10:12:27 AM
Hi guys,

I'm planning to coil tap my SG and have heard about the fact that the cavity is slim, so it's important to get the right pots.

Can you recommend ones that will fit? Would the 500K 3/4 ones, from BK?

OR, has anyone had any experience with Triple Shot Pickup Rings?

Any help is much appreciated!

I'd say avoid the triple shots on an SG

I had trouble fitting them to an Explorer.  You need the angled type, but the hard plastic rings have curved surfaces on the bottom to match a Les Paul.  SGs, like Explorers and Vs, are flat tops.

I haven't tried fitting push-pull pots to my SGs.  I have one in my Explorer, and looking at that compared to the room available in the SG and the best I can say is that if it fits it will be tight. At least the wires go on to the side, so you have a flat surface that's either going to clear the cover plate, butt against it, or be too high.  Mine is a Mojotone CTS 500K push-push pot.

This is the cavity of my Explorer:

This is the cavity of my SG Standard (2011).

As you can see in both cases the PIO capacitors sit up fairly high and still clear the cover plate.  If you are lucky the push-pull pot will too.

Needless to say both of these are custom point-to-point rewires.  Same pots in both cases.

based on a few CTS pots I have sitting around, I'd encourage a solid 30mm from the cavity bottom to the cavity cover.  and that's just for the p/p pot.
