Title: Who's treated themselves to a new guitar this Christmas?
Post by: Chris Rowberry on January 10, 2015, 05:41:39 PM
Has anyone here treated themselves to a new guitar this Christmas or at least planned on getting a in a cheeky order? If so, what company?

I've bought a couple of cheapies... one just before Christmas and one just after New Year (and still in transit, so fingers crossed....)

Aria Pro II CS-400, a nostalgia purchase due to my long-standing fascination with the early-eighties Japanese guitars I saw advertised when I first started buying Guitar Player.

And a late-nineties Gibson The Paul SL, continuing my obsession with lighter, thinner Les Pauls... I had one of these before (a red one which was actually the recipient of my first set of BKPs), but sold it some time ago.

I'm in the mood to buy a new guitar. I keep looking at things, but nothing has been tempting enough. Some of the thoughts:

1970s Les Paul Deluxe
1960s Musicmaster
Contemporary Les Paul Futura in bullion gold
Hohner G2 headless as a backup
Flying V Rudolf Schenker Signature
Flying V XPL
Crazy looking Japanese guitar
Jerry Donahue Tele
Springsteen-ish Tele

Pretty cool. They also do these in some wilder colour schemes as I recall.

edit: I think I am recalling the Les Paul Studio Lite

Yeah, no wild colour schemes on this one, apart from the names!  There were only four colours:  Ebony (black), Cinnamon (red), Concord (blue) and Spearmint (green).

It's one of the very few Gibson guitars with a non-nitro finish, hence the "SL" ("sans lacquer"  ).  It's some kind of UV-cured poly which was meant to dry very quickly and therefore save on production costs.  They can't have been very convinced though, because they never used the finish again as far as I know.

The guitar's constructed very much like the LP SmartWood Exotics and the LP Custom Lite (both of which I've owned before), with a thin body and a slight belly cutaway on the back, but it's all mahogany so it's as much an SG as a Les Paul really.

I accidentally did - a classical/spanish guitar.

Was asked over Xmas break by one of my girlfriend's friends to look over a guitar they had and wanted to sell to see what would need to be done to it before they could sell it as the teenagers had given up playing.

Turns out it was a student type guitar made in Spain in 1968 by Los Guitarreros de Mallorca.
Even though it would have been seen as a humble guitar back then it had all solid timbers and has had 45 years to mature.
Even with old strings it sounded really good - lovely deep mature tones.
I did the evaluation and explained what would be needed to make it good to sell (had some fingerboard shrinkage resulting in sharp fret ends)

Then couldn't resist it and offered to buy it based on how nice it sounded.

I now have it at home, and have refretted it and tidied up the fingerboard shrinkage and reapplied a finish to the back of neck.
Just awaiting some new machine-heads (going for Schaller ones) and I can finally put it back together.
I'll replace the nut and saddle with some nice dense bone too.
I confess I'm looking forward to having it all done and playing it.

Sadly can't put any BKPs on this one.........

Of course a visit to Jonathan at Feline does cause the heart to flutter too . The young rascal let me play a couple of his- oh man! (he did a lovely set up of my blue Strat - and that is now like a new guitar and has been gigged for the first time in ages over the Christmas period.

I've been also been tempted but have managed to resist- a mate had a Baja Tele that he was toying with selling  and I had thoughts of getting it and was, in my head, thinking about which BKP set to get to contrast with my own Tele. But someone else bought it so that put paid to that. I don't really need any more but since when has that been the guiding principle? That went out of the window as soon as I bought my second guitar many moons ago.

I didn't buy any guitars this year, I'm afraid. I've been fooling around with amps though.

Nope I don't think i bought anything guitar related in 2014 save for strings and picks! I still want to get my SG earvana -nutted and set up by Feline at some point in the near future. And I have very strong GAS for a hardtail Jazzmaster right now, I'm considering the squier vintage modded one in blonde :)

I haven't treated myself to anything over Christmas, but I've decided I AM treating myself to something in 2015

I've decided to sell 5 or 6 guitars I don't use very often and buy something nice with the money. At the minute it's looking like a 2000 - 20002 Gibson Gary Moore Signature Les Paul.
