Hi guys,
i recently bought a les paul special with p100 and i want to replace the pick ups. I'm considering a bunch of p90's, in particular lollar and bareknuckle (i have a holydiver in another les paul). I'm looking for a classic p90 sound for rock applications and with good cleans. Which set would you pick? lollar, nantucket?
thanks

Nantucket.
You should consider either a Nantucket set or a Nantucket bridge with a Blue Note neck.
If you want something more modern sounding with more bass try the Supermassive. Anything more than that (e.g., a Stockholm) would be too much for your application.
You'll definitely notice an improvement over the P100

The important thing for me is having a classic p90 with clarity, good cleans, and fat distorted sounds.. So something classic able to handle some extra gain but respectful of the nature of the guitar.

Nantuckets all the way here.

Both absolutly brilliant classic P90s. The Blue Note neck would give you a rounder neck sound, but both sets are just pure P90s. The Nantucket is kind of the archetype P90, classic for a reason. YouŽd be very happy with both!

Thanks for the replies. How do you compare nantucket with lollars?

Only played the Lollars so far, sorry.

which model? what's your experience with them? thanks

I have a 72 55 LP Spec with Nantuckets and they sound great. I use it for all classic rock & blues stuff, with a bit of 90's alternative too. I have lots of P90 guitars and the Nantuckets really get the old junior tones.

Does it handle enough gain to play some heavy 90's stuff, for example soundgarden?
-
I use pedals to get really nice overdriven tones from them. I tend to play more in the classic rock area, but if you take something like Alex Haervey's Midnight Moses, with one of JuanSolo's modded muff pedals, I can get all the drive I need to capture the sound. Another one I play, where I really like the sound from them is Comfortably Numb, where they can nail all the tones from the live version, again using pedals to bring in the gain.
-
are they still clear sounding under gain?
-
Yes, they keep their definition and some of the attack too (depending on the pedal you are using).

Regular P90 for the bridge, underwound for the neck. They sound great, especially the neck pickup. I am generally not too fond of P90s in the bridge but in the neck spot that's where I feel they shine.

Any P-90 with an A5 magnet is brilliant in the bridge position for all kinds of punk rock
i.e., Nantucket, Supermassive, Stockholm, or Pig-90 (lower to higher in terms of output)
I'd still probably recommend Nantucket/Nantucket or Nantucket/Blue Note

Thank for the replies. I still have some doubts about the output but i'll buy them anyway. One more question. Which specs (polarity conductor) should i choose? Thanks

I would ask BKP about those questions.
RWRP only works when the selector switch is in the middle selection (both pickups). Not sure if it affects the pickup otherwise. If you want that you order it on the neck pickup.
I didn't order the third wire for a screen because I wasn't sure what it was. I figure it is like the 4-conductor wiring on the humbuckers, where the ground is separate from the others. I found the braided connector refreshingly simple to wire up, but have a think about it. This is what it says in the FAQ:
What is the difference between braided 2 conductor and 2 conductor + screen options for P90s?
Answer: 2 conductor + screen provides the start and finish of the coil and a separate ground making it easier for series or parallel connections with more than one coil while braided 2 conductor has a single internal conductor and the braided jacket is effectively the other conductor and used as ground.

I've pleced the order.. Stock polarity and braided 2 hope it's correct for my guitar.

Try it first with the standard wiring harness. It should work fine. If (after playing it for a while) you think it should be brighter then look into fitting different pots and/or caps. It should replace your existing pickups just fine. You need to be prepared for some hum though (P100s are hum-cancelling). I've found that a Boss NS-2 helps, as did shielding the cavities in the guitar.
If you have ordered Nantuckets then the issue should be less severe than with my Stockholm, which has a considerably higher output.
-
hum it's not a problem because i play through a kemper and it's super quiet..i think my pots are 500 but in case i will replace them with cts or bareknuckle. Thanks for your advices. I will report back when i'll get them. Thanks

The set arrived. They are fantastic pickups, sound great! I fell in love with p90's so much that i'm considering hb sized for my lp studio or another lp special!
-
It depends where you live to a certain extent. If I was in the US, I might be tempted to try the Lollars. I have a mini-HB neck from him and a Firebird bridge, they are both great pickups. If I was based in Europe I would fit the Nantuckets and forget about the Lollars. I consider both brands to be at a similar high level of excellence.

Glad to hear that. Look forward to further thoughts on them!

They're great for vintage tones but take gain really wel. I only wish they were a litlle more powerful/more output like 5 or 10% more. Said that, they are everything you expect from a p90

Did you already do the height adjustment?`If not that could get you those last 5-10%.

Yes i did it but i'm still trying to find the perfect balance between neck, bridge and pole pieces

A friend of mine had a similar experience with the Emerald bridge pickup. The clarity of BKPs means less compression which can sometimes equate to less 'push' ... he now uses a clean boost with it (his pedal is the MI Audio Boost 'n' Buff but I suspect others like the MXR/CAE Boost/Linedriver, the TC Electronics Spark Booster, or even an EQ like a Boss GE-7 would also work) and is very happy. Advantage is that he can turn that off, whereas a more compressed pickup like a JB you are stuck with that sound.
