Title: Help needed. What body wood suits the best for Abraxas bridge / Emerald neck?
Post by: Lucas on February 17, 2015, 09:30:22 PM
Hi all!

I need some expert advice and some expert help.
As FINALLY I`m just about to purchase and built my first Warmoth Tele, on Warmoth website there`re 2 very similar Tele bodies.
-one is made from ALDER with maple top
-second one is made from SWAMP ASH with the same maple top.

They look very similar, price is similar, both are chambered constructions.

And the question is:
Which wood will suit better for Abraxas bridge and Emerald neck humbuckers? Which one to choose, ALDER or SWAMP ASH?

I`m intending to play rock-blues / rock / hard rock on that guitar. I`m planing to get standard maple/rosewood neck for that body.

Many thanks as always!

Ok, I went for alder.
Was getting afraid that those Showcase bodies my be sold any time. I`ve lost 2 beautiful Teles while waiting this way in the past, so this time I wanted to act quick.

that`s what I got, it`s on its way

Very nice!
FWIW I have an alder bolt-on which has an abraxas bridge pickup - sounds great, a really nicely balanced slightly hot vintage tone :)

I did not answer since I have no experience with either wood, but at least I can tell you that it will work well. The Abraxas works nicely with the contruction and the EM...well I have yet to find an axe where I think it would be a bad idea.^^

That`s ok guys.

Can`t wait for the whole package to arrive. It`ll probably take about 2 weeks I presume to be delivered to the UK.
I`ve only ordered the body with pickguard, control plate, screws, Gotoh Tele hubucker bridge so far. Still have to order BKPs and electrinics as well as the neck.

As I`m planning to build my own custom neck (Flame maple, Figured Zircote board, compound radius, stainless steel frets, Wolfgang neck profile), according to Warmoth website it takes up to 6 weeks to get it built. Patience!

but at last I started my first Warmoth Tele.

Nice lump of wood there.

The Abraxas would sound fine in most guitars i would think, great all rounder.

Do the Abraxas and Emerald balance? I know the DC resistance is higher on the Abraxas, but that being said, I always assumed the Emerald neck would be slightly hotter than the Abraxas bridge in terms of balance

I`ll tell you once I`ll finish the build.

anyway, once that body is already routed for Tele pickups, Warmoth can re-rout it for humbuckers free of charge. I even know what kind of covers I`ll put in. Bridge open white and neck brushed nickel. Sexy!

i know you've already made the purchase but from what i remember people saying (somewhere ha) swamp ash has a bit more mid range than alder, but both are sort of middle of the road when it comes to the brightness/warmth scale.

Not necessarily. In general alder has a more balanced spectrum and will sound a little warmer. Some alder guitars do have more midrange than ash/swampash. The latter woods have a little more percussive response. It very depends on the piece of wood you bought. Some ash guitars sound very full, some are bright. My swampashstrat has edge, but also quite some bass. For a strat.

Abraxas sound wonderful in Mahogany and Alder.  It's a really great pickup and I can't imagine it not being at home in any traditional tone wood.

@Lucas the Abraxas/Emerald-combo will for sure work in those woods.

well, that beauty has arrived few days ago.

What surprised me the most was the weight. Although it`s alder body with maple cap, it weights nothing. I understand that it`s chambered construction but it`s really really light.

Now, it`s time to get the neck.

Can't stop looking at the picture!... there's something pornesque about guitars when they are shown without their various parts on! Mr. Feline always makes me oggle as well.
