Title: NGDx2
Post by: PhilKing on March 01, 2015, 03:51:19 PM
I've been quiet for a bit but I picked up a couple of guitars in February.  One is a classic and the other will be one day (I hope!).  These are some shots of them

This is a 1973 LP Deluxe, and is a guitar that I've fancied for a while (probably because all the other guitarists that I played with in my teens and twenties seemed to have them!).  I really wanted a cherry sunburst and this came along at the right price.  It was missing a few bits (the guy who sold it was selling all the bits for ridiculous prices), but I was able to get some from my parts bin and some from Ebay.  I'll put my mini-mule on it soon, and perhaps put my old 60's Firebird pickup in there too.  The pickups that are in it don't sound bad but are overwound from the originals.

You're probably all wondering about the other guitar.  It's a Teye Scallywag and is amazing:

The neck is big (1 3/4" nut, 25½" scale), but once you've played it for a bit, it feels comfy.   It has a ton of tones, completely passive, though I think there is a choke in the circuit.  In spite of the look, it can get an almost acoustic sound, through a nice Tele, right up to Junior and a Les Paul.  The controls all work really well (see this video for more explanation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ6pXNpm0Ck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ6pXNpm0Ck).  Once you start to get used to them it's not that hard to change them as you are playing.  I was at a jam yesterday and used it for Comfortably Numb, All Right Now, 25 or 6 to 4, Almost Cut My Hair, Black Velvet and White Room, and it worked for all of them (I had a phaser, Wah and overdrive through a Blues Junior).  I have been wanting a Teye for a while and actually have a deposit on new one, but this came up at a super low price and so it screamed buy me!   It has a DiMarzio Tone Zone, but I am thinking of putting in an Alnico Blackhawk, as I think it will look better and will also sound great!

Unusually I can see the pics OK!

I'd never heard of Teye until Lew bought (then sold) one recently.  Obviously a big Zemaitis influence but they seem to have their own thing going as well.  My initial reaction was that they're too ornate and blingy, but they're growing on me....

Nice catches Phil!

Phil has a NGD? Of course I will drool. You really have an insane collection good sir. I envy you on the mini mule and congratulate you on the two guitars, though especially the mini hb LP. Any one like that is rather high on my GAS list. I am also surprised how much I like the other one, would usually not expect that to be my style. Could do without the skull though...

Great stuff. I like especially the Deluxe. The Teye's look is a bit too much for me.

very nice indeed.  I have a '73 Deluxe just like that, and it is a really good guitar.  Those mini humbuckers are much under rated, I think
