Title: Recommendations
Post by: keith on March 18, 2015, 04:34:39 PM
Bonjour all, well after a while of having a set of Mules in my PRS SE Bernie Marsden I am just not bonding with them at all. I took a chance when I bought them as I have Mules before in my Les Paul Standard which were great with that guitar. These pups are really bright, too bright for me in fact in the PRS. I have tried lowering them amongst other things but to no avail they are still not doing it for me.
So,i'm after something else which would cover me for Bluesy, classic rock. This would be going through my Dual Terror and Zilla 2x12 cab if that helps also. Probably put these up for sale after I get something else but the guy I bought them from had cut the wire to fit them into his PRS so any solutions to that would be welcome also, possibly send them back to BKP to re wire?.
Thanx for your time people hope you can help

You could try Abraxas or Crawler for example. Both are somewhat a continuation of the Mules spirit, but power and fatten it up. More bottom end, more roar, rounded hights. The Crawler does that more so than the Abraxas. Both really like blues and classic rock too. The Crawler definetly is at home there and has a fantastic roar.

IŽd say check those two out for starters.

Another possibility could be to look in the other direction? I've been using Mules and Riff Raffs in various guitars for years, and I've recently acquired Stormy Mondays.

For me, it was a toss-up between trying Stormy Mondays or trying Black Dogs or Abraxas... In the end I decided to try the Stormies, knowing that if they were a bit mild for the Les Paul they were going in, then I had several other guitars that could benefit from that.

I've been stunned by the Stormies. I think they're actually "brighter" than the Mules, but I'd describe that as "clearer" - they are so very "sweet" with that brightness. Mules sound "harsh" in comparison - there's an extra rasp on top with Mules, sometimes that's what you need, but I'm wondering whether that's the "too bright" you're experiencing? I'm finding the Stormies do mellow and raunchy - and they bite plenty when I want them to... they actually turn out to be THE vintage humbucking sound I've always imagined.

I've not tried Abraxas or the others hotter than vintage, and I'm guessing they will smooth things out for you... but I thought I'd chuck my experiences with the Stormy Mondays into the pot, you never know!

Abraxas or Crawler for sure. They split good too. Btw, the Crawler is not immens hot, it has medium output, a tad more than a VHII. But it pushes more than a Mule and has a thick midrange, with a round, but not dull topend. Especially with the Dual Terror that might be a nice combo.
