Title: what tele pickup combination?
Post by: jackerypie on March 24, 2006, 02:40:21 PM
Hi need some help?

thinking of getting the piledriver for my bridge pickup and the yardbird for my neck in my us tele.
Would these pickups mix well?
also, in reg to the piledriver, is it an uber metal type pickup, cause thats not what im after, really looking for a crunchy, tight  sound responsive to aaggresive playing technique?
like an 'at the drive in' type sound///

No, the Piledriver  isn't uber metal, is' actually authentic early 50s spec and very close to the original Broadcaster. It does have plenty of muscle but still sounds like a good Tele should with great bite and twang-be prepared for humbucker type power!
It'll certainly sit with a Yardbird neck and the in between tones will be great too.

Howcomes Fender stopped making pickups that powerful after the broadcaster? Sounds like it'd have been worth doing and then some to me.

Here's what I think.

1: In those days most players preferred a clean sound. The Tele was aimed at the country player to replace the accoustic or hollowbody electric.

2: Hot pickups have more winds and take longer to make wich is more expensive and we all know Leo was a bit of a cheapskate.

As Rat says - also the Broadcaster pickups were just transplanted Fender Lapsteel pickups and they are much hotter for obvious reasons.

Great info people! I just bought a Squier Tele today. The axe plays very nice and I know that my first order of business is to get new electronics for it.

From the advice here looks like the best config is the Piledriver and the Yardbird.

OK, dumb question time...
Do I have to worry about these BKPs fitting in the Tele... i.e. they are the same size and everything else?

What kind of pots and selector are recommended?

thanks from Newbie....

I know I'll always have a 4 way selector in my teles so I can have both pickups in series, although I've no idea how well this would work with Piledriver/Yardbird combo, it works fantasticly with a Boss set so imagine the results would be good.

They fit standard sized pickup holes - you just solder them in - normal 250k pots too!
