Title: Recommendations for a Mayones Duvell Elite 6
Post by: Jkouf on April 02, 2015, 11:04:03 AM
Hey guys,

What do you recommend for a Duvell elite 6. Mahogoney body, bolt on wenge/bubbinga neck, eye poplar top.

Right now it has a Nazgul/Sentient combo. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Sounds like you want a metal orientated guitar but what style?

In what ways are pleased or displeased with the way it sounds at present?

Yes I definitely want a metal style pickup and guitar. Mostly thrash but also progressive stuff. The one thing I'm not crazy about the Nazgul bridge is I feel it screeches. I want full and thick but tight and crystal clear chord and notes.

I want high output and something that does leads well. I don't mind a little extra compression either especially when hanging on a note and you need a little extra sustain.

I've been told the Painkiller would be good, C bombs as well. I'm intrigued by the Blackhawks and Warpig though.

Thanks

I have both the CBomb and ABomb. The CBomb can be a bit thin on a bolt on neck, so i would choose the ABomb.

The Painkiller has a ton of mids, verging very close to being muddy in the wrong guitar, but it's tight enough in the low end.

What does your guitar sound like acoustically? This plays a huge role-especially with BKP's.

Keep it evil

I'm very much into thrash and progressive music.

In the simplest terms
Painkiller reminds me of bands like Slayer, Arch Enemy, Death, Necrophagist and Painikiller era Judas Priest!

I've only tried the alnico nail bomb but in any case the nail bomb will have more bass, less mids and less treble.  Does thrash well and also stuff 'more like' Mastodon, Dream Theater, Opeth.

Black hawks are like fuller actives and are compressed but not in a bad way.  They sound massive and full but bright and tight at the same time.
The black hawks really have their own thing going on compared to any other pickups.  Live actives but not.....you really have to try them to understand.

I wonder how Blackhawks would sound in a Mahogoney bolt on?

How are the Blackhawks for leads?

Not sure how to describe the sound of the guitar accoustically but I can tell you it has loads of sustain and the notes are full and fly right out.

Well i've had them in an ESP alder super start and in an all mahogany les paul custom and they both sound fantastic.

It's all relative but for balls out metal and OTT metal leads black hawks rule in the same way actives work well for people like Jeff Loomis etc if that makes sense??

Lots of BKP's are good though

Nailbomb should be what you're looking for.

So I have narrowed it down to either Blackhawks or Nailbombs.

IMO and if it helps nail bomb bridge cover from classic hard rock to extreme metal and as I say prog metal like Opeth/Mastodon.

Black Hawks can do other things but revolve around metal players who used actives so any one from Zakk Wylde/Metallica to Nevermore/Killswitch but feel fuller and more 'toneful' than EMG's.

Thanks Jimmy! Your really making this difficult for me considering I could go either way. So hear is what Im thinking. I have a Skervesen on order now and that is coming with a Ceramic Nailbomb bridge and coldsweat neck.

I'll get the blackhawks now and then I can always swap. Thanks for your help!

Go black hawk. It's very choosey but amazing in the right guitar. what's your tuning? This makes a big difference.
