Title: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day
Post by: Brow on June 10, 2015, 10:36:22 PM
Hi guys.

An old friend of mine has recently been intouch asking if I'd like to restore, and keep, his old Explorer as he doesn't have the time or money for it anymore.

I've always liked the guitar, and have never owned an Explorer, so I jumped at it  The guy that gave me the guitar seems to think there may be an issue with the neck but he's not sure.

He's had it since he was 16, so about 30 years, and it was a gift from his now wife so he didn't have the heart to have it looked at incase it came back that it couldn't be fixed and was therefore essentially worthless. All he's asked is that I get it looked at and that if it can be fixed, and if I can afford it, that I get the work done and then use it as he'd love to see it being used again.

Here's some pics:

The screws and pickup rings were in a bag, along with these

He recalls it as being a Jaydee brand guitar, but a friend of his is sure it's a Gordon Smith and he can't remember. It suffered a headstock break about 2 years after he got it and the headstock was painted over to hide the repairs, and he can't remember what it is.

I've given it a very quick clean down and have put some new strings on it to get some tension back in the neck so I can work out if there's any issue with the neck as he seems to think.

I'm taking it to a tech in a few weeks to get looked at properly, so I guess I'll see then if it's worth putting the time and money into.

Just thought I'd post incase anyone may be interested.

Cheers.

Craig

I was curious about this and looked at some photos online

Jaydee seems more likely, just based on the switch placement.  Found a photo of a Jaydee with the exact same placement of the controls, but with a Kahler trem.  I'm assuming there are quite a few variatons with bridges but that the control cavity rout stays fairly constant if possible

Cheers guys.

Just had this email:

Hi Craig

Thank you for your email.

I am pleased to confirm that this is one of our guitars. I have checked our log book and the serial number corresponds with a wine red Explorer made in 1982.

Best Regards
Andy

I was about to confirm it as a Jaydee. Reminds me of sa few of theirs that I've seen . Nice to see OLD Duncan custom and Jazz pickups  from Duncan.
