ive been recommended to get bareknuckle pickups for my Epiphone Les Paul Standard.
I'm after a slash/jimmy page sound.. i was looking at the Mule and the Black dog? would these get that kinda sound?
any other recomendations? i kinda like the VHII as well.... i dont know what ones to get
-
The Black Dog will nail the Jimmy Page sound! A VHII has a little more mellow sound to my ears, and the mule is the more classic Peter Green sound. The Black Dog just pushes the mid-range right in the Zep sweet spot.

+ 1,000,000 to the Black Dog.
I was literally blown away by that pup!!

Black Dog bridge, Mule neck (alnico II, since slash uses that?)? Would that work, BK conoisseurs?
this sounds suspiciously like a guy I sent here from UG, lol.

Absolutley.
It all depends how you want to approach this.......Slash's tone is very different to Pages.
Black Dog humbuckers have plenty of mid for that classic Brit hard rock tone whereas something like Stormy Mondays with Alnico II magnets will get you closer to Slash's smoother PAF tone.So a combo of the two might well be ideal for you.

^yeah, that's the basis I was going on, Tim- slash uses the neck pickup mostly and JP uses the bridge mostly (maybe, i just made the page one up, it sounds like bridge though, most of the time, for rhythm anyway), so I'd get the bridge Pup for JP, and neck (Al II) for slash.

Are we talikng Slash " November rain solo/sweet child intro"? I want that tone to come out of my neck pup! I had a 2002 Les paul when they first came out with the new burstbuckers and I was expecting to turn into Slash himself but I was really let down.
-
^alnico II, that's what you want. :D
-
I have the Alnico IV Mule in the neck slot and can get good Slash style tones from my epi LP. I heard Alnico II was muddy so I didnt go for that one.

Slash famously uses (claims to use, anyway) Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro (APH-1) pups. The closest BKP would have to be a A2 Stormy Monday. You could go Stormy Monday neck and Black Dog bridge. :) The BD is noticeably hotter than the SM, but the combo would probably work pretty well. An SM/Mule mix would also be pretty smooth, I'm guessing.

for Page, i reccomend a Black Dog.
for Slash, i reccomend a bottle of Jack Daniels
seriously though, i've got an A-IV Mule neck and a A-V Black Dog bridge in my SG and i can get into the region of both. as well as a few dozen other tones.
-
I just highly recommend the Black Dog. Awesome pickups.

well, it can mush up slightly if you increase the gain too much, but it does sound super smooth, which is what you want for slash.
I haven't tried Alnico IV though, it might be as good, minus the muddiness, lol.

just making sure i get the right ones before i fork out the money

I would go with AIV in the neck. It combines very well with an AV bridge pickup. Something like an AIV Mule or Monday would get you a Slash tone and then some.

still in the shop, im gonna pick it up tomorrow and record some stuff. ive nearly got the hang of Whole Lotta Love solo so that might be something to record
-
yeah, poor Jimmy, he's getting quoted a lot in this forum these days :D
Meanwhile I found that the BDs can also do phantastic 80s metal sound a la iron maiden, though not _so well nu metal

For what it's worth I have a set of VH2's in my Epi and it is lovely
I told Tim I was after the Slash type sound and he recommended the Mules at first, but I wanted a tad extra gain so opted for the VH2s
I am really pleased, but there is still a lack of overall depth to the tone, which I think is due to the guitar more than anything else
I would really like to try them in a Tokai or something a bit chunkier when I get a moment as I feel the bodies of cheaper guitar don't allow you to get the most from your pups
IMHO of course!!!

me being a shool kid. I could only afford to get one so ive got the bridge Blackdog just now, still thinking about the neck pick up. Probably will go with the mules. I was originaly planning on getting a VHII but after hearing Hunters Stairway to heaven solo i was hooked on the Blackdogs!!
By the way Tim. You maked one hell of a pickup!!! :drink:
