Title: Gibson Flying V Pickup Selection
Post by: AvD on January 09, 2016, 02:55:59 PM
Hey,im looking for a bridge pickup for my flying V(standard E tuning). I play progressive Thrash/Death, maybe with a touch of black.I want a pickup that can sound something like these bands: Tribulation,Nocturnus,Atheist,Coroner,Voivod,Death and some Dream Theater, Tool,Cynic.

My guitar is a Gibson Flying V 85' the one without pickguard and with kahler tremolo bridge. I believe the wood used in this guitar is alder for the body and ebony for the fingerboard, not sure about the neck though(my guess is maple).

I've got a Dimarzio Super Distortion as the bridge pickup installed at the moment, but the guitar is still too bright for my taste and i want to fatten it a little bit more. Im looking for a fat pickup(not too fat) which will cut through on gigs and rehearsals. I was thinking about Warpig or maybe the Nailbomb, not sure tho :)

My thought was Ceramic Nailbomb. Fast and agressive. Certainly works for DT, Tool, and Cynic. Great general progressive metal pickup.

Alright, but will the ceramic version cut through the mix well, since it has less mids than the alnico one?

My thoughts were ceramic Nailbomb or Painkiller, but I discounted the PK due to your comments about pickups being too bright.

I would not be surprised if the alnico version of the Black Hawk would work for all of those bands you have listed, but I'm not sure if it would work in your guitar.
