Looks like we might have a new one incoming! Saw this pic on the net - new BKP box showing the "Impulse" as a pickup option
-
Ohhhh nice. Tim said new stuff was coming, but this is actually a fair bit of info already. Due to the position in the list I recon it is save to assume that this one will be one more for the Vintage Hot category! Which I am hyped about as it is my favorite realm. Wonder what magnet and such we will get...anyone willing to hazard a guess?
-
There's also a new checkbox for 'custom'!
-
Wicked! Those two checkboxes are on the newest box of mine as well, but really did not notice it before now! Really excited
-
Any songs or bands called Impulse?...
-
According to the Facebook post it's for Josh of Northlane. It has blades like a Blackhawk.

Yeah the Facebook speculation was that its a lower power alnico Blackhawk, but that's pure speculation as far as I know. I hope it is because that would suit me down to the ground!!lol We'll see....
-
God's sake I need to hear the new ones now - I'm about to buy another set

-
This tune is certainly pretty heavily downtuned in some sections - I think they are on the edge of downtuning at times

Mhhh bladed and Northlane signature has curbed my enthusiasm a bit personally. Could be great for many peeps to have a mid powered modern voiced pickup, but it´s nothing I am currently interested in myself. Though I would probably be much more likely to get one of those over the Blackhawk. For a full on metal guitar I´d probably still go MM though for my styles.
Now I am more interested as to what the custom thing means. How far is that going to extend?

Curious about this too. BKP have become too "closed" to the menu, and even simple mods (diferent magnets, over/underwinds, custom screws/bolts) have become dificult and even dependent on who you talk to.
This has caused some people (myself included) to reach for smaller companies to get anything remotely custom.
-
Ugh. Not more beardo djentlemen.
-
Not sure how much I'm allowed to talk about these yet. But I'd love to tell you more.
It's less hot than the blackhawk and has more of a blues-rock voicing than one I'd consider to be strictly mordern. No offensive mid range humps like a lot of the guys playing similar music to me go for. More importantly it's voiced to work well in baritone guitars and cover just about all the ground most baritone guys require.
-
Hi Josh. Good to get feedback from the man himself :)
I would love to see it compared to a Black Dog in the future, since that one also does good in baritones.

The black dog is one of the few bkp's I haven't spent a lot of time with. Easiest way i can describe the impulse bridge is c-hawk meets rebel yell for everything high mids up and emerald from everything below that. Retains the compression and "glue" you get in the blackhawks but is voiced to be a bit more versatile and work well in a baritone.

eep double post
-
Sounds good to me! I play 7-strings exclusively and prefer lower output voicings to high so they should be great - I still haven't got round to trying Blackhawks so I'll probably try the Impulse first instead!
-
Sounds great to me, I've always thought lower output pickups work well tuning down since I've had DiMarzio PAF-7s in my Ibanez guitars.
When's this out - Josh are you allowed to record some clips, by the way never heard much Northlane but checked out your recent stuff, it's bloody great - atmospheric metal

Hey mate will do some clips when released.
I've been using the final protos for over a year. if you go suss out our BBC maida vale session you can hear it on the right with c/hawks on the left http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0356msj (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0356msj)

C-Hawk meets RY has me interested again, since the RY is my favorite BKP. Picturing that in a more modern way could be cool.
I am guessing then it is a ceramic magnet. Makes me wonder though what the wire is. Is it just a lighter wind or actually using more vintage wire to dial things down?
Also, any info on the neck?

It's an A5 magnet actually. And there will be both single coil neck options which I prefer, and a humbucker for those inclined that will still capture my favorite characteristics of the single.
I'm not sure on the bones under the hood but I believe a vintage spec gauge was used. I'll wait for Tim to chime in.

An H-S set is very cool! I always thought BKP should offer something there.
Thanks for coming on to tell us about it Josh.
-
Hmmm ... this HS idea and the RY meets C-Hawk description has me thinking this might be a good set for some of those old Charvel superstrats from the '80s and '90s
-
Many thanks for the info Josh, much oblidged! The more you tell us the more I get interested and hyped I must say.
A H S set really is cool to add to the range. Wonder how the neck HB will turn out then to retain some single coil character. As an increasing fan of P90s, especially in the neck, those seem like the perfect chrossover between HB and SC.

Here's a few clips and a post I made at another forum to fill you guys in a little more:
https://soundcloud.com/josh-smith-965110242/sets/bareknuckle-impulse-demos (https://soundcloud.com/josh-smith-965110242/sets/bareknuckle-impulse-demos)
Guitar i used is my seafoam green Jackson B7 pictured at the bottom of this post (27" scale, bolt on maple neck/ebony board, alder body with maple top, 550k bridge vol, 280k neck vol tuned F, A#, F, A#, D#, G, C with 12-82 kalium strings).
"While they look just like the blackhawks and cobras, looks can be deceiving! These babies have been designed from the ground up to suit baritone guitars and for guys that use big strings by myself. The neutral midrange we went for has meant that they work well in just about any guitar I've tried as a result though because no frequencies really stick out. The thing I love about them the most is while they handle that low tuned high gain stuff well with ease, they also excel at just about anything else you throw at them, especially mid-gain tones which is something that not many pickups geared towards this purpose can do. They're not really voiced as a "Djent" pickup set at all.
Output wise, to my ears they're about 20% cooler than the blackhawks.
The impulse bridge is c-hawk meets the rebel yell for everything high mids up and c-hawk meets emerald from everything below that. Retains the compression and "glue" you get in the blackhawks. It will give you controlled highs and lows which can be hard to control in a baritone, a consistent attack across all strings and plenty of thickness and sustain while remaining clear enough. It is by far the tightest sounding alnico I've ever heard.
The neck single coil is like none I've really heard before. It's got an extremely present and thick midrange with rolled off presence almost like a P90. Just enough bite without being harsh, plenty of cut and works great with both 500k and 250k pots. Enough power to keep up with the bridge and heaps of grind. The low end is big enough to capture the way a detuned guitar sounds but isn't boomy and is very tight. Never gets lost behind effects and has a relatively low noise floor.
The neck humbucker is like a cross between the blackhawk and VHII. It uses an asymmetric coil design to give great articulation, I wanted to capture that aspect of the single coil. It screams on lead tones, sustains for days and cleans up very well. Like both the bridge humbucker and neck single it also covers breakup tones very nicely. Sounds to my ears about as hot as the single. Split tones are unreal on this one."

Sounds pretty cool
But asymmetric single coil doesn't make any sense
Perhaps he meant scatterwound
-
No no, he was refering to the neck humbucker. The set will be available on both configs (HH and HS).

ouch
misread the ~humbucker~ part
-
I really liked the Clean BMN track ... sound reminded me of the clean sound on Ahab albums
I also really liked the sound of the neck single coil
-
As Metale suggested earlier, I'm more interested in the custom option as it's the lack of flexibility from BKP in recent years (and price) that also forced me to a smaller manufacturer where I've found better pricing, more flexibility and at least the same quality. It would be nice to see BKP return to a more flexible company so it gets a thumbs up from me.
-
Oooooh they sound very nice indeedy!!!
-
I wonder how these sound compared to the Juggernauts.
-
here's a great video done recently of a metal impulse demo in a les paul. not sure how to embed it

After hearing the video Josh posted, I'd say that the Juggernauts have a much smoother high end. They 'purr' more. They have a weight in the mids, and particularly in the low mids as opposed to the Impluse set, where the tone seems to be very even from high to low. Far more 'bite' in the highs than the Juggernauts.

This is a pretty spot on observation.
