:D  if your into the retro stuff, they look pretty cool! the "blues custom" looks ok too, prices vary quite a bit from US to over here though "valve standard"  $299  (£171), over here at £339 inc vat  thats a big hike!

thats true mate, US seems really cheap for guitar stuff indeed

mind you i've seen the valve junior combo for 89quid over here... guess we can expect even less from this head - thats less than a boss pedal! can hardly go wrong!

Guitar Center in NY are doing the Valve Junior combo for $99!   What could they ask for the head (it would have to be less right?)!

whats thu point in a 5 watt head. It realy couldnt drive more than one small speaker so wouldnt it be smarter to just attach a 10" to it?

Try one of the Zvex nano heads through a 4x12 and prepare to be surprised what a very small amp can drive.

It's sub 1 Watt

I'll tell you: i have the Valve junior, and i attatch it to a 4x12 vintage cab with celestions, and it kicks butt! only 5 watts, but hooked up to a couple of speakers it sounds awesome. (with my Heritage LP)

you dont even need any pedals, just turn it up. pure overdrive tone.

the only problem is you dont have much clean headroom unless you use single coils, but i A/B it sometimes with my 60 W amp, just for extra tones.

a 5 watt valve amp can seriously drive big cabs, try it out in your local music shop, or better still by the head because it's only going to be £100.

you will love the tone. (if your into rock~)

Just an on/off switch and a volume knob, that's pure genius. 8)

yes it is 8) you can get enough EQ with your Guitar and pedals, or treble boost or whatever. i swear the tone was mental.

I heard a Epiphone Valve Special through a Marshal 4X12 and there is no way you can say its too quiet - in fact your neighbours will hire a hitman if you play one in your bedroom!

The valve junior seems like a nice amp for home use and I seriously consider getting one sometime. I agree that 6W single ended into any serious speaker cab will be way louder than the low power rating suggests.

I've read multiple comments from people who started modding them, for tone or mostly to reduce 50/60 cycle hum. Allegedly the head version is better in this respect because it uses DC for heater filament which is more silent than AC. This and the reason it can use almost any speaker config (combo only has a single 8ohms output, head has 4/8/16ohms output) makes the head version more adaptable and more silent.

Although not entirely faultless it still seems like a fun little fella.

Have fun with the links!

The 60 cycle hum is the only thing that gets my goat about this little amp.
however, it's only really noticable at low volumes through the 8" speaker.

you dont notice as much through the 4x12, and certainly not when you have a drummer & bassist playing as well.

the heads version is probably the better option, because Epiphone aint the best at making speakers. plus, all you need is a good 2x12 / 4x12 and yer in instant overdrive territory. i would like to try a 15" too.

More beef than Bernard Matthews!!

If I have a spare £100 ever, I'm probably gonna buy the head to try out. Sounds like it'll be just what I'm after. Does it ever get harsh though?

The head version is better, from what I've heard.  They altered the wiring to reduce the hum.

It can made to sound harsh which is controllable with the guitars tone and volume controls and/or your picking strenght. The stock EL84 isn't that great either and can sound a bit ragged at higher volumes. Replacing it for a better one would probably be a good idea.

I am told the combo smooths out with some good quality valves and a better speaker like a Jensen P8Q

The one thing the Epis have is a dark tone - much darker than a Fender Pro/Blues Junior - I don't know if new valves would sparkle up the sound.
