Title: HS-P90s for old school Prog
Post by: JCN1218 on March 21, 2016, 09:42:13 PM
Hi everybody. I've got a Gibson SG Standard that I've had for years and I'm looking to breath new life into it. I already have plenty of guitars that handle every kind of humbucker situation I could ever come across, so it doesn't really stand out for anything as it is now. I currently don't have any guitars with a set of P90s though, and I've heard good things about P90s in SGs, so it seems like the perfect thing to make this guitar unique and a main player again.

I'm looking for something that mostly excels for cleaner, jazzier type playing, but can also take a bit of dirt. I'm playing in an old school prog rock project right now (think Yes), and I'm looking for something that'll give the SG a unique flavor through my AC15. My other axes are an Epiphone ES-175 with Stormy Mondays, a Gibson Les Paul with stock pu's (for now), an Epiphone Sheraton II with a Mule in the bridge and a Nantucket in the neck, a Fender American Standard, and an old Ibanez that I converted to fretless with Duncan singles in it.

So something that'll cover some different sonic territory that the aforementioned (if that's even possible). Something bright with a little bit of a hollow mid-range maybe (the guitar is very mid-dominant). Preferably something other than the Nantucket, since I already have the neck in another guitar, I'd like to try something totally new.

Any recommendations would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Well, my initial thought hearing classic prog was NT or MQ bridge and a Blue Note neck. Hearing what you have and especially that you have a NT neck already I am inclined to say Blue Note set.

Seeing how versatile the rather pigeon holed Manhattan neck still is in terms of old school sounds the Blue Note seems like the obvious ticket here. Pure P90, sweetness, natural clarity, and taking gain in that classic way.

Should you think you need more tightness, which I donīt recon, you could always use a MQ bridge, but for me this looks rather open and close with Blue Note....

Plus I really want to see a Blue Note review as I have been salivating over those for a while now, but being a student funds are...well, you know.

Thanks for the advice, Kiichi! From my own looking and listening endeavors I was also starting to lean toward the Blue Note set. Seems like they check all of the right boxes. I might just have to pull the trigger on them. I've been dying to play the SG again, but it desperately needs its own voice.

I know what you mean about funds, I just started back to school this semester. Fortunately, I just got a pretty nice tax return recently, so I have a little bit more financial wiggle room than usual. Time for some new toys.

So Ben responded to my usual inquiry this morning and he's actually recommending the MQ set. Decisions decisions. The guys at BKP have never steered me wrong before, but the Blue Notes do seem very intriguing.

Well, sure that will work too, and nicely as well. But the MQ and NT are pretty similar. Plus the Blue Note neck with its sweeter tone should be great for Yes style cleans. The BN will just be a bit more different from what you have, while the MQ will not be. Yet either will do great work and the different guitars can easily be enough to still set the sound apart.

Pulled the trigger on the Blue Note set! I didn't add the info about steering away from the Nantuckets in my message to Ben, so that was a pretty big factor. Hopefully they ship over quick, I can't wait to get them installed and give them a thorough test drive.

Good choice. I am so very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
