Title: Bare Knuckle Supermassive P90 experiences wanted!
Post by: Alfi27 on July 25, 2016, 04:34:08 PM
Hello guys! I have a question, that I have thought about for a little while. I have five guitars, where two are for sale and three of them I will keep. Two of them are humbucker axes, Abraxas and Rebel Yell equipped. The tone is not particularly similar, but similar enough that I can use the same amp and pedal settings with great results. My Nantucket loaded Les Paul Special is a bit of a different story though. Even though I love the tone for classic rock and more vintage type tones, I think that it can be a little bit thin and overly bright for heavier applications. Horses for courses of course, but I feel like the Special could have matched the other twos a bit more. So what I need to know: will the Supermassive be a compromise for classic rock and such? I do not feel that the Abraxas and Rebel Yell are, really. I am not a particularly big fan of Muse and Mr Bellamy, although I have nothing against him. That said, I am not the biggest fan of Santana nor Stevens, so I do not think that would be the biggest issue. If I eventually go with the Supermassive, it would be the bridge model only as I am happy with the neck pickup. I am more into the heavier, older Green Day tone of Billie Joe's JB equipped strat at the moment, but would the Supermassive cover both this tone and his newer, more vintage rock n roll-tone of his Juniors?

I think you will probably be fine with a Supermassive.  I have the Stockholm, which seems to be a slightly darker and more powerful version of the same thing.  I can get quite heavy tones out of it and still get regular Junior type P-90 sounds as well if you play with the volume knob a little.  I think the Supermassive would be even more so.

I would ask littleredguitars2 though, as he has experience with all of these pickups and is totally into stuff like Green Day, which is not a style that I play.

Thanks! I will PM him. One other question popped up today (really too much time on hand with vacation and all), and I wondered if this could be right?

Nantucket: 42AWG
Supermassive: 43AWG
Stockholm: 44AWG(?)
Pig 90: 45AWG

Due to the 43AWG used on all Rebel Yell, Abraxas and Supermassive, should I expect certain tonal characteristics to be similar? Like compression, attack etc?

Alright, so I spent quite some time with my dear Les Paul Special today. I am pretty sure the reason why I started this topic was that I haven't played this guitar for a while... The guitar is totally bitchin'! It plays like butter and when I roll the tone knob off slightly to about 8.5, the tone is so raw and aggressive! I suspect the Supermassive not being quite as aggressive, due to the resonant peak being lower. The output is not an issue either, because I love to use boost and OD pedals.

Pedals off: awesome AC/DC type of tone, but the pickups are so dynamic that the tone can be clean with the right pick attack!
Pedal(s) on: raw, in your face, raw and aggressive distortion for hard rock to heavy metal!

If I write in this topic again or somewhere else about replacing this pickup, please slap me right in the money maker
