Title: Thoughts on the Ibanez Mini Analog delay
Post by: gwEm on September 01, 2016, 10:42:15 PM
Picked one of these up second hand.

First thing to say, is that it is a good pedal, so don't doubt I think so!

Compared to my MXR carbon copy, the repeats of the Ibanez are darker. They also seem to lack quite such a lively tape echo-ish character like the MXR has. Still, the delays are defined and not sludgey as I remember the EHX Memory Toy being.

So, soundwise, definitely very acceptable. Not quite as good as my MXR, but then what is?

Delay time was pretty much identical between the pedals. The way the Ibanez went into self oscillation was more controllable.

So my next test was to measure the power consumption of the pedals. The MXR I knew was 12mA. I was shocked to find the Ibanez was 30-35mA! That was a bit disappointing as I planned to run it off a battery pack.

I measured my PT based digital delay pedal and it was pulling 27mA.

So I was thinking, is the Ibanez really analogue? I pulled it apart and sure enough it contained genuine BBD chips. The internal construction was very solid - good components, well put together. I also thought that the external case of the Ibanez was strong and good quality.

Anyway, for me the Ibanez didn't make the cut. The sound wasn't as good as my MXR and the high current draw finished the deal by making it impractical for my board.

Still, as I said at the start, I do think it is a good pedal - nice sound, well made, affordable price.

I tried it and it was quite good, untill I tested the Maxon AD-9 Pro.

I loved my old Ibby analogue delay. I am much more into tape style echo now, but it's a great pedal, imo.

My 1981 AD-9 needs a repair. It's great vintage analog delay, yet with only 300ms. I think the Maxon AD-9 Pro which I have bought a few months ago is even better and has bonusses: 450 ms and multihead switch. The Maxon is very lush, quiet and doesn't mess with your sound, even in front of the amp.

I already have a Boss DD-7 and an MXR Carbon Copy.  I'm not sure how many delays a guitarist needs, but if I were to buy another one I would probably get a combined delay/reverb like the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath, rather than a second analogue or digital delay pedal.  I tend to feel that once you have something that covers a certain area reasonably well you should be able to tweak that somehow to get the range of sounds you want, otherwise sell it and get something more versatile.
