Title: Is Anyone Currently Using a WARPIG in their Guitar ????
Post by: JTM45 on April 05, 2005, 09:22:21 PM
Hi.
Is anyone here currently using a Bare Knuckles Warpig in the bridge of their guitar? I'm thinking of getting one and I'd like to hear from anyone who has used or is using them.

From what I can make out it's the most powerful pickup that Bare Knuckles produce. Does it sacrifice anything by being so powerful? Does it 'clean-up' at all if you roll back the volume?

I'd be very grateful for any opinions or advice about these pickups. Cheers!

The Warpig is quite a versatile beast. Not only does it produce a seriuos high gain tone, easily the match of an '81 for saturated gain-it's got a fantastic tone too.
Also, with both coils being in the region of DC11.25K each, it splits down really well and the parallel tones are brilliant.
For rock and metal it's a serious silly grin humbucker as it almost plays itself-the twin screw coil design ensures a great bottom end, the mids are strong without being spikey and there's clarity in the highs with no fizz.

The biggest surpirse for such a high gainer is that clean tones are very useable too-the neck pickup in parallel just has to be heard to be believed.

I used to play (uses a set of VHII's now) with a set of Warpigs and they are wonderful for almost every style of music, especially harder kind of music. And yes they clean up very well when you roll back your volume. I've even used them for blues

They rule!

hey Tim-or indeed, anyone who knows this stuff-this parallel function is available on any humbucker equipped guitar with the addition of a switch that you guys sell isn't it? which particular switch is this (i couldnt work it out in the shop and im a complete novice)?

it also makes it sound more like a singlecoil?

A 500K push pull is the tidy way to do it or an on/on/on mini switch.

Only if you have four conductor wiring!

Well done Batman, you spotted the obvious mistake :D

Your pickup has to have 4 conductor hook up wire to be able to do this mod.

Iīve actually havenīt been able to push my warpigs to the limit yet as i still play thru a V-amp2 ---> computer.....some kind of amp is on the way! (played in quite a few bands from 15 to some over 20 and now in the lower 30īs iīll have it as a hobby)

I had EMG 81 in bridge on the old guitar and it really roared even with this amateur setup and the warpig is a little behind BUT....my guess is that the EMGīs low imp. output is a benefit when doing it my way and that the warpig will really reveal itself if it would push the front of a marshall/mesa etc.

ALTHOUGH, it SCREAMS as is also and one thing you can expect is that the warpig really delivers every note in a five note power chord itīs frigginīAMAZING at that!!
Itīs VERY well balanced right from the bottom end to squeels!!
(make NO mistake Tim knows his s**t)

And last but not least, iīll rather pay a little more for handmade scatterwound killer pupīs from a company wich can stand as an example for the way customer support SHOULD be than sponsor for example DiMarzio where iīll just be one of the masses!
(E-mailed with Tim ītil 21:00 one night when sorting out a color mistake, now THATīs customer support in MY book!)

Just buy īem....youīll never use anything else again!

CUSTOM warpig based on vintage Emerald, V-amp reverb only:

Just imagine what will happen with a rectifier!!! :-)

Killerwhale,

Can you post some high-gain clips with the Warpig but without any effects so I can hear the raw tone of the pickup.  Also do the same with a clean tone.  Cheers!

Oki! BUT as said, V-amp directly to a cr@ppy soundblaster....not to flattering for the pupīs!! Will post "real" sound when i get my amp!!

Strange though, it sounds as a reverb or echo or something...it must be on the soundblaster cuz i turned all effects off on the V-amp!

Here ya go:

http://www.gbg.bonet.se/pisces/pisces/bridge_clean.mp3
http://www.gbg.bonet.se/pisces/pisces/neck_clean.mp3

Also! The guitar needs some work as i got itīs trussrod set WAY off and the builders made the nut all round! Will also put in 5-way rotaryīs for all sounds (paralell, singlecoil etc.)

thanks for that!  :)  trouble is, i cant really hear it too well (in particular the dirty setting), but like you said, it was through a dodgy soundcard. thanks  for trying anyway! hopefully there will be some soundbites of the pickups reviewed in this month's Guitarist on the free cd for a change!

Free CD - freeCD....if the mag cost Ģ3.50, which is all the paper is worth, then you could call it a free CD! Why do Guitarist have to put a cr@p CD on the front cover anyway...does anybody actually play it????

i dunno, i play it sometimes. sometimes they have good backing tracks and its useful if there is an odd note grouping or whatever in the technique section that i cant work out in my head. but yeah, i see what you mean. maybe Guitarist should just do reviews and articles and leave the technique to Guitar Techniques.

take in note that i have really HOT 2.1 system AND monitors out.....what iīm hearing may NOT be the case on your computer!!!!!!!!!
