Title: Advice for swamp ash/wenge guitar
Post by: Shotgun on November 27, 2016, 06:31:07 PM
Hi to all!

I'm building a custom guitar and I need some user advice for the pickups.
The guitar has 1 piece swamp ash body and glued 3 piece wenge neck, 26.0 inch ebony fingerboard, flamed maple top.

I find a very agressive pickup with great attack. I play modern metal with drop B tuning.
The swamp ash body has weaker mids so I decided to pair it with wenge neck which has great mids and lows. I think it can produce a very resonant and quick guitar with a balance sound.

What Bkp model recommended for me?

Thanks a lot for help!

I would suggest the ceramic Warpig set or the Black Hawks. I find the Miracle Man, which another gentleman suggested a good option also, but I think lacks the mids you're looking for.

Painkiller set, hands down.  I have a swamp ash bodied 7 string with a wenge neck & maple fretboard.  I originally had a set of Juggernauts in it and hated them.  The low end was just a bunch of flub.  That wenge neck introduces sooooooo much low mid into the sound that with the Juggs, it was just super exaggerated.

So then, I would suggest a Painkiller set.  Possibly a Black Hawk set w/ ceramic bridge or Nailbomb/VHII set, again with ceramic bridge.

Fast attack, tight, agressive and handles detuned: Aftermath, Painkiller and maybe the C-Bomb too.

A-bomb or C-Bomb.  Maybe Rebel Yell.  Rebel Yell has a wide pick attack but is not necessarily as high output as an A-Bomb or a C-Bomb.
The Painkiller is another great option.

It is great that you had an instrument with a similar construction because you are able to advise well in this situation.
The Juggs certainly sound good in a maple neck / basswood body where the upper mids are exaggerated.  I would imagine what a disaster would be created with a low mid dominant guitar haha.

If I'm not wrong the all wenge neck gives low mids and bass to the swamp ash (high mid and high end focused)  the guitar will have equal bass, mids and highs and will be resonant and quick.
If it is correct than the Aftermath can be the most agressive pickup in it I think. AM has crunchy mids, a bit low mid oriented but not exaggerated.
Now I have a Lundgren M6 and I will try it in this guitar. The M6 was great with swamp ash body and maple neck, ebony fingerboard. It gives some warmth to the bright woods but it doesn't sound perfect with warmer woods.

I had Painkiller in koa body/koa neck/ebony board and alder/maple/ebony, Aftermath in koa body/koa neck/ebony board and swamp ash/maple/ebony, Black Hawk in swamp ash/maple/ebony and Juggernaut in swamp ash/maple/ebony.

My experiences:
- Painkiller: in alder it had too much mids. In koa it was great tight sound like The Devil Wears Prada Zombi EP's guitar sound.
-Aftermath: in koa it was the best pickup. It made fuller and more modern sound than Painkiller. In swamp ash/maple it had weak bass and low mids and too dry.
-Black Hawk (ceramic): it was better in swamp ash/maple than AM but I missed something.
-Juggernaut: in swamp ash/maple it was cool but the alnico magnet gave some flub.
-Lundgren M6: in swamp ash/maple it was the best. I tried it in a hungarian walnut (not american black walnut which is a bright wood, the hungarian walnut like a superb mahogany) with maple/wenge neck and it was too much.

Based on my experience of BKP, if you want tight and very aggressive with upper mids, I'd go with the Nailbomb. If you want to play leads, go for the alnico option but even with an alnico magnet, it's still the tightest and most aggressive pickup I've ever tried. I actually found the Miracle Man remarkably refined and restrained compared to an A-Bomb!

I thought of the Painkiller set also.
