Just got another cabinet from the Dutch 'boutique'-brand Hook. Compact, yet stil around 30 kg. It's loaded with WGS-speakers, a Veteran 30 and a Hook ET Custom, a WGS that's specially designed for Hook. It's close to a Celestion G12-65 creamback.

Oops, that cab sounds so huge that it seems to mud up the lowend, especially with the Crawler in my strat. Now, a guitartech had retubed and biased my Rockerb MK1. It sounded good, yet I missed agression, zing and a bit of the famous Orange-crunch. This weekend I took the chassis out of the shell and replaced the JJ's ECC83S in position 1 en 2 and also the phase-inverter by EHX 12AX7's. I left JJ ECC81's for the FX-loop and the reverb. I kept the JJ ECC83S for the clean channel (sounds glorious). The EHX preamptubes really brought back the genuine RV-sound. It's a beast now and sounds better with this cab. Way more alive and with a better controllable bass on the drivechannel. The JJ's made that channel to dark.
Next time I won't give the guitartech a blank cheque to improve the sound. He said JJ preamptubes were the best. Maybe, but definitely not in every position. Maybe this story helps other RV-owners.

JJs are probably the ones he makes most money on ...

I like JJs in my Marshall 2204, but I tried them in other amps and they didn't sound as good.

Yeah, I was thinking the same.
