Good evening guys! Christmas is approaching, hope you are all doing well.
Recently got two new guitars in: an ESP Eclipse (full thickness) equipped with an EMG Het set, and a Squier Classic Vibe Strat equipped with probably some of the dullest singlecoils I've ever tried! Turned out that my intensions of changing them wasn't completely wrong, and it is now equipped with some Suhr V60LPs in the neck and middle, and a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. Never been a fan of Duncan, and I considered going Knuckles of course; but it is a Squier...! However, I have to say that I think the tone is stellar! Sounds really cool, once I got the pickup height right. The single coils are also one of my favourites ever (very similar to Irish Tours). I think the reason why the JB has become such a love/hate pickup is the fact that it is designed to work with 250k pots, and it can be very harsh with 500k in the wrong guitar. In my opinion, that fact is what makes this pickup so brilliant! No need to make any compromises in a HSS setup.
The ESP clip is obviously not entirely comparable, a guitar that is truly massive! It is actually a few mm thicker than a Les Paul Custom! I put it in just for fun really, the JB vs Sinner is the most interesting part. Hopefully this will be helpful for people considering HSS vs SSS for their next (or present) Strat!
At last, a few notes: the Sinner was connected to 250k volume and tone, and everything was at 10. The JB was connected to a 250k volume only, at 10. Sinner was quite close to the strings (the staggered G and D magnets were about 1.5-2mm from the strings pressed at the last fret), and JB not quite as close (more like 2.5-3mm). Amp used was the Kemper, with a Friedman SS100 profile to the left and a Friedman Brown Eye profile to the right. I won't say what I think about the clips, first I want you to comment! Researching the Sinner, and this came up in the search. I'm surprised no one has commented on this. It's worthy of necro status. Thanks for the comparison clips. They give a good contrast between these different pickups.
